Role Purpose
Lead and provide technical support to new materials innovation programs Invent and optimize compositions for new glass and glass-ceramics and product applications; capture associated intellectual property with patent attorneys Collaborate with process research and innovation teams Coordinate with and/or direct laboratory technicians Solve technical problems associated with process innovations or manufacturing operations Provide fundamental understanding of glass structure and property relationships for new product inventions Utilize modeling and characterization tools with colleagues within Inorganic Materials and other organizations across Corning’s technology community
Key Responsibilities
Devise experimental plans and execute critical experiments Review relevant internal and external literature Document and present experimental and modeling results Work closely with team members in product and process development organizations Interface and collaborate with commercial, engineering and manufacturing colleagues Maintain safe and clean work environment.
Experiences/Education - Required
PhD in Physics, Glass Science, or Geology and 5-10 years of work experience in relevant industry or lab environment Background in material science, glass, physics, chemistry or geology Experience/background in optical materials and applications Experience with non-silicate and non-oxide materials Technically curious, self-motivated, and able to work independently and in teams Ability to develop and execute experimental plans Hands-on technical aptitude Strong communication skills – verbal and written Attention to detail, rigorous execution of work and documentation Able to manage multiple priorities at once Up to 20% travel required both domestic and international

Leadership experience Glass forming knowledge Modeling proficiency Knowledge of material mechanical properties and fracture mechanics Proficiency in chemistry and chemical durability of materials Able to transition materials/products from research through development and beyond Knowledge of characterization tools for bulk and surface
