About this role
Do you want the software you write to help keep the world's largest cloud running? On AWS Managed Operations, you will build the tools and automation that operators rely on to keep every AWS Region available and reliable. We own the platform operators use to find and fix issues across AWS Regions. The software you build removes manual effort from daily operations so a lean team can safely run infrastructure at global scale, and it is used every day by the operators and partner teams who support AWS Commercial and Dedicated Regions. We are making a focused investment to bring Generative AI into operations and move this platform to an agentic-first interface, so that routine operational response becomes automated rather than manual. This is a growing area for the team, and we are adding engineers to design and build it from the ground up. You will help shape how AI is applied to real operational problems, with governance and security built in from the start. We are looking for a Software Development Engineer who enjoys solving hard technical problems and owning systems end to end. You bring strong engineering fundamentals and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical partners alike. Arlington, VA (HQ2) This role will sit in our new headquarters in Northern Virginia, where Amazon will invest $2.5 billion dollars, occupy 4 million square feet of energy efficient office space, and create at least 25,000 new full-time jobs. Our employees and the neighboring community will also benefit from the associated investments from the Commonwealth including infrastructure updates, public transportation improvements, and new access to Reagan National Airport. By working together on behalf of our customers, we are building the future one innovative product, service, and idea at a time. Are you ready to embrace the challenge? Come build the future with us. This position requires that the candidate selected be a U.S. Citizen. Key job responsibilities In this role, you will: - Build and operate the platform services that let operations teams define operational scope, automate permissions, formalize service commitments, and measure operational health across AWS Regions. - Deliver features end to end, from design and code through deployment and live-site operation, and scale them to more teams and Regions. - Develop AI and agentic capabilities that automate routine operational response so operations teams can execute at greater scale. - Partner with operators and service teams to turn operational data into tooling that measurably reduces manual effort. - Write well-tested, maintainable code and raise the engineering bar through thoughtful code reviews. A day in the life You will join our engineering and data science group within AWS Managed Operations, the team that builds the software and analytics behind AWS operations. Software engineers, data engineers, and data scientists work side by side here: engineers build the operational platform and its services, while the data science group turns operational data into the findings that show where to reduce effort next. Where other teams operate Regions directly, our team builds the productivity tooling those operators depend on. You will work most closely with operators, partner service teams, and the data scientists on our own team. Our software development teams build solutions that support a centralized operational model and act on data-driven findings to reduce operational toil for Amazon builders. We deliver high-quality software that makes operators more productive: resolving issues faster while standardizing how operations run. Most weeks, your time goes mainly to hands-on design and coding, with the rest split between working alongside operators and partner teams and a light meeting load for planning and reviews.
