Position
Summary: We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join Team Shipyard, a DevOps-focused engineering team in Chennai within athenahealth’s Internal Developer Platforms (IDP) organization. IDP builds the platforms, tools, and capabilities that help athenahealth R&D teams navigate the complexity of our technology environment, develop software more efficiently, and deliver products that operate effectively across an open ecosystem. The Lead Software Engineer will provide technical leadership across the design, development, and delivery of systems and capabilities supporting athenahealth’s developer experience and software delivery lifecycle. This role offers the opportunity to work across a broad technical landscape and gain exposure to large-scale infrastructure and developer platforms.
About the Team
Team Shipyard is a large, established engineering team with broad ownership across some of the most critical components of the athenahealth developer experience and software delivery lifecycle. The team is responsible for the systems that deploy athenahealth’s core production software to thousands of servers across multiple data centers on a regular basis. Our highly automated deployment platform operates at significant scale and continues to evolve as our technology and engineering practices advance. Shipyard also owns and supports key source control infrastructure, including Perforce, placing the team at the center of athenahealth’s software development lifecycle. Beyond the underlying infrastructure, the team develops and maintains the supporting tools and services that enable release readiness, code traceability, and the movement of software throughout the development and deployment process. Technologies used across the team include AWS, Jenkins, Harness, Perforce, Git, Java, Perl, Python, Ansible, server management technologies, and more. Essential Job Responsibilities: Lead technical design and development within an Agile team that includes Engineers, a Scrum Master, Product Owner, and Experience Designer. Create clear, precise, and appropriately detailed technical design specifications that enable effective implementation. Serve as a technical leader and trusted resource for the team by collaborating closely with colleagues, mentoring engineers, and providing guidance that improves both individual and team effectiveness. Share relevant technical and business insights across the broader engineering and product organization. Build deep expertise within the team’s problem domain and take meaningful ownership of the systems and capabilities the team delivers. Help coordinate and drive engineering efforts across the team to ensure work is completed successfully. Additional Job Responsibilities: Contribute to the continued evolution of athenahealth’s technology and engineering practices. Support systems and infrastructure operating across multiple data centers and thousands of servers. Work with DevOps technologies and practices, including RESTful APIs, AWS, Jenkins, and related tooling. Work with source control management systems and supporting infrastructure, including Perforce and Git. Contribute to services and tools supporting the software development and deployment lifecycle. Apply knowledge of Unix/Linux, microservices, Docker, and distributed computing to solve technical challenges. Collaborate within an enterprise-scale Agile development environment. Expected Education & Experience: Min 7+ years of experience demonstrating strong software engineering capabilities and a solid foundation in computer science. Bachelor’s degree, bootcamp training, or equivalent professional experience Experience working within an enterprise-scale Agile development environment. Proficiency in at least one modern programming language. Working knowledge of technologies and concepts
