Data Center Mechanical Engineer Position Overview The Data Center Mechanical Engineer is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and optimizing mechanical systems and critical cooling infrastructure within mission-critical data center environments. This role ensures reliable thermal management, optimal environmental conditions, and maximum uptime while supporting continuous IT operations and maintaining compliance with industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Critical Cooling Systems . Develop mechanical drawings, equipment schedules, airflow diagrams, and piping layouts. Identify and report SPOFs within the design of cooling architectures (N, N+1, 2N) to meet Uptime Institute Tier II, III, or IV certification requirements. Calculate cooling loads, CFD modeling, and thermal capacity planning for current and future IT infrastructure density requirements. HVAC and Precision Cooling Management Oversee operation of computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units, computer room air handlers (CRAH), in-row cooling systems, and rear-door heat exchangers. Manage chilled water systems including chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and distribution piping. Implement and optimize free cooling, economizer systems, and adiabatic cooling technologies. Monitor and maintain environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, and airflow to ensure optimal IT equipment performance. Thermal Management and Optimization Conduct thermal assessments using temperature mapping, hot spot identification, and airflow visualization techniques. Implement containment strategies including hot aisle/cold aisle configuration, blanking panels, and physical separation systems. Optimize air distribution through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and real-time monitoring. Address thermal challenges in high-density computing environments including rack-level cooling solutions. Building Management Systems (BMS) Configure, program, and maintain BMS platforms for monitoring and control of mechanical systems. Develop control sequences, setpoints, and alarm parameters for automated system operation. Integrate DCIM platforms with mechanical systems for comprehensive infrastructure visibility. Analyze trending data to identify performance issues and optimization opportunities. Mechanical Infrastructure Operations Perform routine inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance on cooling equipment including chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and air handling systems. Troubleshoot mechanical failures, cooling deficiencies, and equipment malfunctions with minimal impact to IT operations. Coordinate maintenance windows and implement change management procedures for mechanical system modifications. Monitor system performance metrics including cooling efficiency, equipment runtime, and energy consumption. Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Analyze cooling system efficiency and identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and improve PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness). Implement energy optimization strategies including variable speed drives, free cooling utilization, and equipment staging optimization. Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for mechanical system efficiency and environmental impact. Support sustainability initiatives including water conservation, refrigerant management, and carbon footprint reduction. Capacity Planning and Load Analysis Analyze
