About this role
At Amazon Health Services, we're building a unified design system that powers consistent, high-quality experiences across our clinical and consumer products — including a growing suite of AI-powered interfaces. We're looking for a Design Systems Designer who brings strong visual design craft, systems thinking, and curiosity about AI-forward design to help scale our component library, define visual patterns, and build the infrastructure that enables dozens of product designers to move faster with higher fidelity. This is an opportunity to shape the foundational design language for AHS — working on components, tokens, interaction patterns, motion standards, AI interaction patterns, and accessibility guidelines that directly impact every product surface our customers touch. As AI capabilities expand across our products, you'll help define how AI-driven experiences look, move, and behave within the system — ensuring they feel cohesive and trustworthy. You'll also bring AI into the design systems workflow itself: leveraging AI tools to accelerate component creation, automate documentation, explore variant generation, and streamline design-to-code handoff. You'll partner with designers, engineers, and AI/ML teams to ensure what we build is beautiful, usable, and scalable. Key job responsibilities Design and maintain scalable UI components, patterns, and guidelines within the AHS design system Define and evolve visual tokens (color, typography, spacing, elevation, motion) that ensure consistency across products Audit product surfaces for system adherence and identify opportunities for new or improved patterns Create detailed component specs including states, responsive behavior, accessibility requirements, and usage guidance Define and document design patterns for AI-driven experiences (generative UI, conversational interfaces, AI-assisted workflows) within the system Collaborate with front-end engineers to ensure coded components match design intent Identify and implement AI-powered workflows that accelerate design systems operations — variant generation, automated specs, documentation, and design-to-code handoff Contribute to design system documentation, making it easy for other designers to adopt and contribute Participate in design critiques and system reviews, providing feedback grounded in systematic thinking A day in the life As a Design Systems Designer at AHS, you might start your morning using AI tooling to generate component variant explorations that would have taken hours manually — then refining the best options with your craft eye. After standup with the systems team, you'll spend focused time in Figma evolving a component's visual states, leveraging AI-assisted prototyping to test responsive behavior across breakpoints. In the afternoon you'll partner with an engineer to review a coded implementation against your spec — possibly using a design-to-code pipeline to bridge the gap — then collaborate with design and tech teams to define patterns for a new UI surface. You'll contribute to automated documentation workflows and end the day exploring visual directions for an upcoming token update — balancing craft with systematic rigor and a bias toward experimentation.
About the team
You'll join the AHS Design Systems team within the Amazon Health Services organization — a small, focused group building the foundational layer that enables all of our product designers to do their best work. We're actively integrating AI into our own workflows — from component generation to documentation to code handoff — and we want people who are excited to push that forward. You'll work alongside teammates in Seattle, San Francisco, and Boston, partnering closely with product designers, front-end engineers, and accessibility specialists. We value craft, experimentation, and supporting each other's growth.
