About this role

Australia's cloud infrastructure is expanding at pace, and the demand for reliable, cost-effective power has never been greater. As an Energy Strategy Manager in AWS's APAC Energy team, you'll be at the center of this growth, leading the connection of data centers to the electricity grid in Melbourne and navigating one of the most dynamic energy markets in the world. AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain, and we're looking for talented people who want to help. In this role, you'll work with utilities, regulators, and local authorities to deliver high-voltage transmission and substation infrastructure on time, on budget, and to specification. You'll manage grid compliance across a growing portfolio of sites, structure and negotiate energy contracts, and develop strategies that keep pace with Australia's evolving regulatory landscape as the grid decarbonizes and decentralizes. This role offers the opportunity to shape how AWS connects to the Australian grid at scale, balancing rapid infrastructure expansion with technical compliance and long-term energy strategy. If you're energized by the intersection of energy infrastructure and technology and want to work on problems that directly enable the next generation of cloud services, we'd like to hear from you. This role is based in Melbourne. 10% travel may be required. Key job responsibilities • Serve as the single-threaded owner for grid connection delivery across AWS data centers in Melbourne, from initial due diligence through energization, directly enabling cloud capacity growth. • Lead relationships with transmission network service providers (TNSPs), distribution network service providers (DNSPs), and regulators to secure grid capacity and negotiate connection agreements that meet AWS timelines. • Coordinate across internal teams (Planning, Real Estate, Design, Procurement, Construction, Operations, Finance, and Commissioning) to align power infrastructure delivery with broader site schedules, resolving dependencies and removing blockers. • Conduct power due diligence for new data center sites, assessing grid capacity, connection feasibility, redundancy requirements, and long-term supply reliability. • Develop and negotiate utility contracts, energy services agreements (ESAs), and connection agreements, ensuring commercial terms align with AWS standards and regional market conditions. • Own technical grid compliance across the portfolio, ensuring all connections meet National Electricity Rules (NER), grid codes, and relevant Australian standards. • Interface with government bodies, market operators (AEMO), and regulatory authorities to obtain approvals, influence policy development, and ensure AWS infrastructure expansion objectives are supported. • Manage capital budgets for power infrastructure delivery, tracking expenditure against forecasts and identifying cost optimization opportunities. • Develop strategies to reduce energy costs and improve supply resilience, including assessment of emerging grid technologies, tariff structures, and alternative supply arrangements. A day in the life Your morning might start with a call to a network service provider, working through connection application timelines or resolving a technical query with the design engineering team for a new substation. By midday, you're reviewing grid compliance documentation with the design team, ensuring submissions to AEMO align with National Electricity Rules. In the afternoon, you could be negotiating commercial terms on an energy services agreement or presenting a capital expenditure forecast to finance stakeholders. You'll manage
