About this role

Every year, over a billion returns flow through Amazon's Worldwide Returns & ReCommerce (WWRR) network — each one a moment where Amazon can either compound waste or turn it into opportunity. This role is a steward of that environmental impact: the person who ensures that scale becomes a force for sustainability rather than a liability. You will have direct influence over the carbon footprint, waste diversion, packaging, and public sustainability story of one of the largest reverse-logistics operations in the world. WWRR's sustainability program spans three verticals — carbon, inventory waste, and non-inventory waste — plus packaging and sustainability messaging, and this role is the single-threaded owner across all of them. You will directly own the Carbon vertical (carbon intensity glidepath, building decarbonization funding strategy, and carbon reporting/forecasting) and the Sustainability Messaging workstream (ensuring the environmental claims WWRR makes about ReCommerce, Resale, and returns programs are substantiated and compliant). You will orchestrate the Inventory Waste Reduction and Packaging workstreams across their program owners, and author the quarterly WWRR Sustainability QBR end to end, driving it through stakeholder, Director and VP reviews. You will partner internally with ReCommerce and Returns Transportation, and externally with WW Sustainability (WWS), WW Ops Sustainability (WWOS), Global Procurement, and Amazon's building and science sustainability teams. This is a high-visibility role with direct input into annual planning (OP1/OP2) and regular VP-level reviews — few positions at Amazon give one person this much leverage over the environmental outcome of a billion-plus customer moments a year. Key job responsibilities - Own the WWRR Sustainability program end to end: set strategy and annual/multi-year goals across Carbon, Inventory Waste, Non-Inventory Waste, Packaging, and Sustainability Messaging, and own the associated goals in Kingpin. - Own the Carbon vertical directly: manage the WWRR carbon intensity (CI) glidepath and footprint reporting, drive the building decarbonization funding strategy (e.g., low-carbon materials and next-gen building templates via OP1/OP2), and partner with WWS and WWOS on carbon attribution and long-range glidepath alignment. - Own Sustainability Messaging directly: define WWRR's approach to substantiated environmental claims for Resale, ReCommerce, and returns programs (e.g., green-claim frameworks, Lifecycle Assessments, displacement-rate substantiation), working with WWS Science and Sustainability Legal to meet FTC Green Guides and ISO claim standards; partner with PR and Industry Relations on external positioning and conference strategy. - Drive Inventory Waste Reduction, Diversion, and Circularity in partnership with ReCommerce and upstream teams: reduce the share of inventory routed to recycle, improve the Waste Diversion Rate, and scale circular initiatives (e.g., textiles, electronics, and other recovered-material streams). - Drive Packaging waste reduction with ReCommerce and packaging product teams: right-sizing/overboxing reduction at grading, returns-packaging journey mapping, and plastic/paper bag reduction pilots. - Coordinate Non-Inventory (operational) Waste reduction and diversion across ReLo Operations, including reusables and recycling-stream compliance programs. - Own the quarterly WWRR Sustainability QBR as single-threaded owner: coordinate inputs from a matrixed set of contributors across ReCommerce, Returns Transportation, ReLo Ops, and Planning; author the Carbon and Messaging sections; and manage the workback schedule to VP review. - Translate sustainability performance into the financial and carbon language leadership uses, and prepare narratives and metrics for QBRs, MBRs, and goal reviews.
