Your work environment

Newmont has fully owned and operated the Tanami mine since 2002. The mine operates in the remote Tanami Desert of Australia. The mine and plant are located on Aboriginal freehold land that is owned by the Warlpiri people and managed on their behalf by the Central Desert Aboriginal Lands Trust. Tanami is a fly-in-fly-out operation in one of Australia’s most remote locations. Tanami is 270 km from its closest neighbours, the remote Aboriginal community of Yuendumu.

Your role

Reporting to the Superintendent, Geotechnical and Backfill, in the position of Engineer, Backfill you will establish and implement the Backfill Management Plan and Backfill Standards across the Tanami mine operations.

This permanent position will be based on-site at the Tanami mine located in the remote Northern Territory working on a fly in fly out roster of 8 days on/6 days off from Perth, Darwin, Brisbane or Alice Springs.  Mine village accommodation will be provided.

Key responsibilities will also be

• Providing backfill advice across Technical Services, Geological, Mining Operations, Surface Operations and Maintenance functional teams

• Supporting the safe and timely execution of backfill design for paste, co-disposal and rockfill stopes

• Undertaking numerical modelling for paste stability, hydraulic modelling for reticulation design and implementing these into a design package for execution

• Monitoring fill designs, paste plant operating trends and laboratory data to ensure quality control and design compliance

• Conducting underground inspections of paste infrastructure including reticulation, valves and bulkheads to ensure built to standard

• Assisting with daily paste/rockfill tracking and planning and providing backfill input into rolling weekly mining production schedule to ensure backfill targets are achieved

• Providing backfill input into medium and long term mine plans

• Participating in backfill-related projects and managing contractors as required

• Seeking continuous improvement opportunities in design and data collection and management

• Assisting and mentoring team members and building positive relationships.

Yours skills and experience

• Degree qualification in Engineering, Geology, Science or related discipline

• Underground mining experience with site-based exposure to Geotechnical and/or Backfill

• Proficient skills in design packages including Deswik and/or other Cad software

• Skills in FLAC-3D or similar numerical modelling and Pumpsim digital software highly regarded

• Skills in Microsoft Office applications and related software including SAP

• Full and unrestricted eligibility to work in Australia essential.
