Amgen is seeking a Scientist to join the Pathology Laboratory within the Translational Safety & Risk Sciences (TSRS) Department in South San Francisco, California. The Scientist will develop and apply tissue-based assays, including multiplex assays and digital image analysis, to support target expression studies, preclinical model development, pharmacodynamics, efficacy, and biomarker discovery.

Responsibilities

Develop, optimize, validate, and standardize histopathology assays using FFPE samples, including single-plex and multiplex immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH) in colorimetric and immunofluorescent formats. Use imaging modalities and digital pathology tools to generate, analyze, and interpret tissue-based data for target qualification, pharmacodynamic and efficacy assessments, and biomarker development. Collaborate with pathologists, research investigators, and translational teams to deliver high-quality data supporting mechanism-of-action studies, in vivo model development, and toxicity assessments across therapeutic areas. Maintain clear, complete documentation and communicate results through laboratory information systems, databases, and team presentations.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree OR Master’s degree and 2+ years of relevant research and industry experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of relevant research and industry experience    Preferred Qualifications: PhD or master’s degree in cell biology, molecular biology, or related discipline. Two or more years of molecular pathology experience, preferably in an industry setting. Demonstrated expertise in pathology-based methods, including IHC, multiplex IHC, ISH and immunofluorescence imaging. Experience with digital pathology and image analysis, preferably using HALO and/or Visiopharm. Experience with automated staining platforms, such as Ventana, Leica Bond, or IntelliPATH, is preferred. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

Experience analyzing pathology imaging data, including H&E, IHC, multiplex immunofluorescence, and/or spatial transcriptomics. Familiarity with whole-slide imaging and digital pathology platforms, such as HALO or Visiopharm, is preferred. Understanding of machine-learning methods for image segmentation, classification, detection, and representation learning. Strong communication, organizational, and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary scientific environments.
