Work Arrangement  Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Markham Elevation Centre (MEC) three times per week at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role

We are looking for a new graduate Software Developer with an interest in distributed systems and fleet scale device management to help build, test, and maintain our embedded control and data plane infrastructure. This is a great opportunity to start your career working on software that runs across GM's entire vehicle fleet, with direct mentorship from senior engineers on the team. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in software development (C/C++) from coursework, internships, or personal projects, hands on experience from a collegiate engineering design team such as Formula SAE, SAE AutoDrive Challenge, or EcoCAR, curiosity about open source technologies, and an eagerness to learn how production grade software is designed, tested, and supported.

About the Team

The Device Data Capture Organization builds the embedded and cloud software that moves data off GM's vehicles and configuration onto them. Our data plane runs on the vehicle's ECUs collecting and uploading data, and our control plane pushes configuration out to the fleet from the cloud. Teams across GM rely on this, from Super Cruise and AV engineers training models to quality teams diagnosing field issues.

Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain the on vehicle control plane that retrieves configuration from the cloud and applies it across the vehicle's ECUs. Design, implement, and maintain the on vehicle data plane that collects, processes, and forwards data from vehicle systems to cloud storage. Contribute to optimizing our control and data plane for reliable data egress and configuration delivery over intermittent connectivity, rapid convergence to new configuration, and a minimal CPU and memory footprint on the target ECU. Work with cloud services such as Azure, AWS S3, and Firestore for configuration delivery, device state reporting, and data egress. Collaborate with DevOps and Cloud teams to help roll out new on vehicle software and configuration safely. Instrument our software with the observability needed to monitor the fleet, diagnose issues in production, and resolve them at the source. Contribute to the open source community by reporting issues, contributing to documentation, and submitting patches.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's or Masters Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Data Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field Open to those who have graduated or will be graduating between January 2026- May 2027 Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week Preferred Qualifications: Experience on a collegiate engineering design team such as Formula SAE, SAE AutoDrive Challenge, EcoCAR, Baja SAE, or similar, building and delivering a vehicle system as part of a team. Experience with C, C++, or a related language through coursework, internships, or personal projects. Exposure to Linux, Android, or QNX platforms through coursework, internships, or personal projects. Foundational understanding of distributed systems, configuration management, or data pipelines, gained through coursework or projects. Strong problem solving skills and a willingness to dig into and troubleshoot complex issues. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Eagerness to learn how to deliver and support software in a production environment. Familiarity with vehicle communication protocols (UDS, CAN, SOME/IP,
