Overview
We are seeking a Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Intern for our Denver, CO office, with the opportunity to begin part-time in Fall 2026/Spring 2027 or full-time in Summer 2027. This is not a typical civil engineering internship. As part of our growing Colorado SUE team, you will gain hands-on experience in a specialty practice that combines civil engineering, surveying, utility investigation, geophysics, technology, and risk management. You will work alongside engineers, surveyors, CAD professionals, and experienced field staff to investigate, document, and help clients understand existing underground utilities before design and construction. Our Denver SUE group operates with the flexibility and exposure of a small team while supported by the resources of a national engineering firm. This internship is intended to provide meaningful project experience, and strong performers may have the opportunity to transition into a full-time position after graduation.
Responsibilities
Support preparation of SUE drawings and deliverables using AutoCAD Civil 3D. Assist with processing and reviewing field-collected utility and survey data. Work with engineers, CAD staff, surveyors, and field crews to document existing underground utilities. Assist with utility records research, data reduction, field note review, calculations, and quality checks. Review utility investigation information, including field sketches, photographs, records, and electronic field data. Assist with permitting and project coordination activities. Read and interpret engineering plans, utility plans, surveys, and project specifications. Gain exposure to SUE Quality Levels and utility investigation practices in accordance with ASCE 38-22 and applicable Colorado requirements. Participate in both office and field activities to better understand how utility data is collected, evaluated, and incorporated into engineering deliverables. Work alongside junior and senior engineers and other technical professionals to support project schedules and deliverables. Participate in Colliers Engineering & Design’s internship programming, including networking, professional development, and exposure to other disciplines within the firm.
Qualifications
Actively pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geomatics, Surveying, Construction Engineering, or a related field. Interest in utilities, infrastructure, surveying, construction, or subsurface investigation. Basic AutoCAD experience preferred. Civil 3D experience preferred. Prior coursework or experience involving utilities, telecommunications, surveying, GIS, or geomatics is a plus. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Reliable transportation to the office and project sites. Ability and willingness to occasionally work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to read, write, and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
