About this role
Are you a software development leader who thrives on building high-performing teams and delivering impactful products at scale? In this role, you will lead a software development team responsible for designing, building, and operating systems that directly influence how Amazon serves its customers. You will own the strategic direction of your team's software portfolio, define product roadmaps, and partner across the organization to solve complex technical challenges. This is an opportunity to shape the future of software systems that matter. You will balance tactical execution with long-term planning, drive architectural decisions, and create an environment where engineers do their best work. If you are energized by mentoring talent, simplifying hard problems, and delivering results that customers can feel, we want to hear from you. Key job responsibilities - Lead a software development team through the full software lifecycle — design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance — while owning the one-to-two-year strategic vision for your team's systems and products. - Define and maintain product roadmaps by working backwards from customer problems, making transparent tradeoffs on sequencing and resourcing, and aligning priorities with organizational goals through the planning process. - Develop, coach, and grow engineers at multiple levels by creating collaborative development plans, providing actionable feedback, and building a pipeline of future technical leaders within your team. - Drive system design and operational excellence by partnering with engineers to establish architecture standards, evaluate tradeoffs across scalability, maintainability, and performance, and ensure your services meet high quality and reliability bars. - Communicate effectively through written narratives and cross-team discussions to advocate for your team's charter, influence peer roadmaps, and earn alignment on technical and business decisions. A day in the life You start your morning reviewing operational metrics and system health dashboards for the services your team owns. Mid-morning, you join a design review where your engineers walk through a proposed architecture, and you ask questions that sharpen the approach. After lunch, you meet one-on-one with a direct report to discuss their career goals and map out a development plan. Later, you collaborate with partner teams on an upcoming cross-team initiative, aligning on priorities and timelines. You close the day by reviewing a product narrative your team is preparing for leadership.
