About this role
About Rivian Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract. As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role
Summary As Associate General Counsel, Product and Consumer, you will lead the legal team supporting Rivian’s entire consumer journey — from vehicle sales, financing, and delivery through service, ownership, and everything in between. You will manage and develop a team of experienced attorneys and legal professionals covering consumer sales and retail, field and mobile service, product counseling, marketing and brand, and consumer go-to-market launches, while personally advising Rivian’s executive and business leadership on its most complex and highest-visibility consumer matters. This is a Director-level role requiring both deep subject-matter expertise in consumer protection, retail, and product law and the people-leadership skills to run a high-performing, fast-moving legal team in service of Rivian’s mission to Keep the World Adventurous Forever.
Responsibilities
Lead the Product and Consumer Legal Team: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of attorneys and legal professionals — setting priorities, allocating workload across business partner groups, and managing outside counsel relationships and budgets. Counsel on Consumer Sales & Retail Transactions: Advise on new and used vehicle sales and financing, leasing structures, trade-in programs, vehicle delivery, title and registration, Know Your Customer and fraud checks, consumer financial services and related licensing, and consumer-facing policies across Rivian’s digital retail platforms (rivian.com, Shop, Account, App, and T2D). Advise on Product Counseling & Consumer Protection: Counsel on other products connected to vehicle sales, including optional products, primary auto coverages, Adventure Gear and Gear Shop, consumer software subscriptions (Autonomy+, Connect+, and related platforms), as well as advising on product feedback and market insights, regulatory complaints, and pre-owned vehicle sales — ensuring compliance with Section 5 of the FTC Act, Consumer Product Safety Commission regulations, and state dealer advertising and consumer protection laws. Support Marketing, Brand & Commercial Strategy: Advise Marketing on owned and paid media, influencer and brand ambassador agreements, sponsorships, experiential marketing and events, eCommerce, creative content, and sweepstakes and promotions, while helping shape Rivian’s broader commercial strategy for consumer products. Drive Consumer Go-to-Market Launches: Support international and U.S. go-to-market planning and new location launches, financial services licensing support, and cross-functional program management for new market and product launches. Scale Legal Operations: Build and maintain scalable legal resources — including terms of use and website publication programs, contract templates and self-serve tools, AI enablement for the legal team, and knowledge management — to support Rivian’s growing commercial footprint. Own Team & People Programs: Lead employee programs, rewards, and team-management initiatives for the Product and Consumer Legal team, and perform other legal and general business matters as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience: 10–15+ years of legal experience with significant depth in consumer protection, retail/e-commerce, product counseling, or related regulatory practice, gained in-house and/or at a reputable law firm.
