About this role

We are looking for a Research Scientist to develop cutting-edge social simulation techniques powered by large language models. This role focuses on building computational frameworks of human simulations that are (1) accurate and predictive of real-world behavior, judgements, and opinions, (2) representative of societal diversity, and (3) scalable: simulating individuals to large groups and societies. Key responsibilities include formulating metrics and validation methods, developing frameworks for multimodal environments, collaborating with product teams to drive research, and publishing high-impact research in top AI and social science venues. You will join an interdisciplinary team of domain experts, machine learning researchers, social scientists, and engineers to conduct cutting-edge research and advance the next generation of computational frameworks that simulate human social behavior at scale to advance societal health. Drive projects by defining key research questions. Design, implement, and evaluate experiments to provide clear answers. Publish research findings in top academic conferences and journals, staying up to date with the latest advancements in the field. Collaborate with internal and external scientific domain experts. Contribute to real-world impact by landing research in Google products and services.

Minimum qualifications: PhD in Computer Science, Computational Social Science, Statistics, or a related field. 2 years of experience publishing research in machine learning or NLP conferences or journals (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, EMNLP, COLM). 2 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: social impact of AI, reinforcement learning, multimodal agents, computational social science, or natural language understanding. Preferred qualifications: 3 years of experience with training, evaluating, and interpreting large language models. Experience working with large and noisy datasets. Experience collaborating across interdisciplinary fields. Experience designing and executing independent research projects. Passion for research on societal benefits and implications of the internet and AI with a focus on simulation.
