The opportunity
We have an excellent opportunity within our Wordings Team for a Contract Wordings Technician. This position reports to our Head of Technical Wordings and involves close collaboration with a team of expert drafters, divisional leadership, and underwriters. The Wordings Team sits within the Underwriting Strategy and Performance (USP) team. The USP is part of Markel International’s Corporate Management team, with responsibility for the Performance, Risk, Technical Underwriting, Oversight, Governance and Reinsurance Placement for all Underwriting Divisions. The role is an addition to the current technical wordings team. The role will include day to day interaction with the underwriting and support functions to provide technical assistance to underwriters in the delivery of their business plans. What you’ll be doing: Providing reviews and advice on various wordings and products including Markel products, Binding Authorities, Cover-holder and broker wordings. Staying ahead of emerging trends including regulatory, legal and market developments and provide advice to underwriters where there is a potential impact on any of Markel’s product offerings. Developing and delivering advice to underwriters on wording related issues and including emerging market, regulatory or legal trends that impact product wording where required. To ensure the central wording repository is accurately maintained and keep records and reports relating to wording matters. Work with other areas of the business to ensure the sharing of technical expertise and consistency of approach to wordings. Coordinate alongside other team members to provide transparency of workloads and the timely delivery of service assisting underwriters in wording-related matters. Ensure wordings are aligned with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Involvement in ad hoc information requests / projects related to wordings. Ability to explain sophisticated and technical topics in an approachable and accessible way for audiences both inside and outside the organisation. Post bind thematic reviews of product lines. Additional responsibilities include: Assist with the mentorship and development of more junior members of the team. Support change to products and process due to regulatory developments Acquire knowledge of emerging risks and market environment to assist in innovation and underwriting appetite and rigor Assist in the development of technical knowledge within product lines with underwriter training Provide assistance as required for auditors from within the organization and those from outside Collaborate closely with support divisions Compliance, Product Governance, Legal & Regulatory, IT, Operations as required Take part in strategic project work as required Handle delivery of required actions Attend internal and external meetings as required Lead and provide advice on crafting custom wordings and clauses for large or complex risks. Undertake any applicable trainings and development opportunities to further develop technical expertise.
