Long Description Why This Role Matters Our Facilities organization is responsible for acquiring, installing, and maintaining the critical equipment that keeps production lines, test labs, and major campuses running 24 × 7. As a staff Design‑for‑Reliability Engineer, you will be the technical authority that guarantees every capital‑intensive asset is specified, procured, and commissioned with reliability and maintainability built‑in from day one. Your work will directly influence capital spend, equipment uptime, warranty exposure, and overall total cost of ownership.
Core Responsibilities
Scope‑of‑Work (SOW) & Specification Development • Partner with Production Operations, Facilities Maintenance and Engineering, and Safety to capture functional, performance, and reliability requirements for new equipment. • Evaluate detailed SOWs, technical specifications, equipment maintainability and reliability requirements (condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, etc.) that become part of the purchase package. • Conduct preliminary reliability risk assessments on proposed equipment concepts before vendor selection. Capital Project Planning & Budgeting • Ensure reliability‑based concepts are included in cost estimates (design, testing, spares, warranty, maintenance) and embed them into capital project budgets. • Perform trade‑studies that balance upfront cost vs. projected reliability/maintenance savings. Design Review & Validation (Pre‑Purchase) • Evaluate vendor designs, drawings, and sub‑system interfaces against DfR criteria. • Support design‑review meetings with suppliers, ensuring required reliability tests, diagnostics, and serviceability are included. • Require and review supplier reliability data (historical MTBF, warranty claims, accelerated‑life test reports). Asset Commissioning & Handover • Support commissioning activities that verify that installed equipment meets the reliability specifications documented in the SOW. • Ensure new equipment handover includes failure‑mode monitoring plans, spares lists, and maintenance strategies to include vendor recommendations/requirements and documentation. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing • Coach Facilities engineers, project managers, and maintenance technicians on DfR principles, reliability budgeting, and risk‑based design. • Create and maintain a Facilities‑wide DfR handbook, templates, and training modules. Standard Job Description Develops, coordinates and conducts technical reliability studies and evaluations of engineering design concepts and design of experiments (doe) constructs. Recommends design or test methods and statistical process control procedures for achieving required levels of product reliability. Compiles and analyzes performance reports and process control statistics; investigates and analyzes relevant variables potentially affecting product and processes. Ensures that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards. Analyzes preliminary plans and develops reliability engineering programs to achieve company, customer and governmental agency reliability objectives. May develop mathematical models to identify units, batches or processes posing excessive failure risks. As necessary, proposes changes in design or formulation to improve system and/or process reliability. May determine units and/or batches requiring environmental testing, and specifies minimum number of samples to obtain statistically valid data. Basic Qualifications Core Technical Skills Experience with FMEA, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance tools, production equipment maintenance, and DfR. Demonstrated ability to integrate reliability and maintainability constraints into SOWs and design reviews.
