Environmental Affairs Engineer / Specialist (Compliance Studies) Alabama Power Company – Environmental Affairs, Compliance Studies and Accounting This position is located at the APC General Service Complex in Calera, AL JOB SUMMARY Alabama Power’s Environmental Affairs Department is seeking a qualified and motivated candidate to join its Compliance Studies team. This position may be filled at an entry to senior level depending on the applicant's skills and qualifications. Environmental experience is preferred, but a strong work ethic and aptitude for learning is the primary requirement. This position provides ongoing engineering support and performs studies for generating facilities to ensure compliance with water quality regulations. This hands-on engineering position will be responsible for design and implementation of innovative and cost-effective water monitoring, flow measurement, and treatment systems in support of meeting regulatory water discharge requirements at APC Generation facilities. The position requires a willingness to become knowledgeable in various environmental areas as needs arise and a desire to implement innovative solutions. This position will require a mix of hands-on field work, project management, and data analysis. Additionally, the position serves to provide efficient response and troubleshooting for customer requests from APC Environmental Affairs Compliance, Southern Company Generation – Fossil and Hydro, Southern Nuclear, and Southern Company Services. The standard work-week for the group is 4 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday. Job Duties and Responsibilities: Interpret regulations and permit requirements to identify potential risk areas Design, execute, and evaluate environmental study plans for wastewater systems Diligently review data and clearly present results to stakeholders Become an accredited sampler in the departmental quality system POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Engineering (e.g., Environmental, Civil, or Chemical) or non-engineering science-related field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science) is required. Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Alabama in an applicable engineering discipline, or the ability to obtain licensure or certification, is a plus. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of current water regulations for generation facilities is a plus (ELG, NPDES, CCR, etc) Industrial facility experience is a plus Demonstrated quick learner Ability to innovate and think "outside the box" Analytical and data analysis skills Computer and software skills, able to manage large datasets. Knowledge of various software packages outside of Microsoft Office is a plus.
