About this role
Do you want to own the hard technical problems behind planning at scale? The Under the Roof Labor Planning Technology (UTRPT) team is hiring a Software Development Engineer III to design and scale the systems that power labor planning across Amazon's fulfillment, delivery, and operations networks. Our services influence how hundreds of thousands of associates are planned for every day — generating capacity predictions, scheduling recommendations, and planning signals that operators depend on. This is a role for someone who wants breadth and ownership: design and scale distributed backend services, lead through technical influence across teams, and integrate machine learning and data-driven systems into production. You'll work at the intersection of software engineering, machine learning, and operations research, partnering with Science and Data Engineering to bring AI-driven planning models into reliable, scalable production. You'll have the autonomy to shape solutions end to end and set technical direction that the organization builds on. Key job responsibilities Own the design and delivery of complex, distributed backend services at the center of UTRPT's roadmap, making architecture decisions that scale cleanly across new business lines and geographies Partner with Science and Data Engineering teams to productionize machine learning models and data pipelines, ensuring reliability and operational excellence in production systems Drive engineering excellence through design reviews, code reviews, and testing strategy — raising the bar for how the team builds and setting best practices others follow Lead cross-team technical initiatives that resolve ambiguity into shippable plans, breaking down problems with multiple risks and roadblocks into incremental deliveries Mentor engineers toward senior-level ownership through technical guidance, operational best practices, and by modeling how to balance short-term delivery with long-term architecture A day in the life You lead a design discussion on a new planning service, weighing trade-offs across reliability, latency, and cost. You review a teammate's design and unblock them with guidance on extending existing solutions. You partner with Science to productionize a model integration, ensuring the right operational practices are in place. You pair with a junior engineer on a code review, helping them see the bigger picture. Using AI-native development tools, you make progress on a system you own end to end, and you carve out time to remove a piece of systemic friction slowing the team down.
About the team
The Under the Roof Labor Planning Technology (UTRPT) organization builds the software systems that power labor planning across Amazon's fulfillment, delivery, and operations networks. Our services influence how hundreds of thousands of associates are planned for every day — generating recommendations, capacity predictions, and planning signals that operators and planners depend on. We work at the intersection of software engineering, machine learning, and operations research, partnering closely with Science and Data Engineering to bring planning models into production. We value engineering rigor, operational ownership, and continuous improvement. We're in the middle of a multi-year effort to consolidate and scale our platform across new business lines and geographies. The team embraces AI-native development practices, offers regular cross-team collaboration, and provides high-ownership opportunities for engineers ready to lead through technical influence and shape how we build the future of labor planning at Amazon.
