Summary This role performs engineering studies, calculations, and settings development for substation protective relays in the Duke Energy Carolinas West Transmission Region. Responsibilities focus on applying new protective relaying for planned projects, as well as successful integration of new designs into existing legacy designs where required.  This role also provides support and troubleshooting for implementation and commissioning of designed relays/protective systems as needed by field technicians.  Additional tasks include support requests for stakeholder teams including Transmission Planning, Account Management, Tech Support, Operations, Asset Management and Compliance teams. The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied. The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

Provide protective relay engineering expertise to identify, analyze, and resolve increasingly complex issues. Plan and execute work (scope, schedule, estimates) and adapt to changing priorities. Conduct engineering and related studies. Create and update technical schematics and configuration files in support of planned project work in accordance with established standards, guidelines, and philosophies. Prepare clear technical documentation (reports, calculations, sketches) for engineering analyses in support of developed deliverables. Maintain and grow technical and professional skills. Coordinate effectively with teammates and stakeholder teams; communicate clearly; maintain accurate records. Support company goals and represent the company professionally. Basic/Required Qualifications Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below . Engineer II Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE (A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree) Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience Engineer III Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program (A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.) Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience Desired Qualifications : Utility industry experience. FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam passed. Strong time management and prioritization skills. Familiarity with protection tools (e.g., Aspen Relay Database/OneLiner, CymTCC, SEL-5010/5030, AcSELerator).
