Job Description

Summary Plans, lays out, fabricates, assembles, and wires a wide variety of prototype electrical and electronic instruments, apparatus, and experimental equipment. This role supports development activities by producing high-quality prototype hardware and assemblies that meet customer requirements, engineering intent, and applicable industry standards.

Position

Hours: This role follows a 9/80 schedule; Monday - Thursday hours are 7-4pm, every other Friday is an 8 hour shift, and off the next Friday. Overtime is uncapped.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities Plan the sequence of operations, set up work, and select the tools, materials, and equipment required for complex prototype fabrication assignments. Work from sketches, schematics, wiring diagrams, detailed drawings, samples, and verbal instructions to determine materials, parts, layouts, and fabrication methods. Fabricate, assemble, and modify chassis, panels, circuits, brackets, mounting hardware, and other prototype components. Install wiring, terminate electrical connections, and fabricate coaxial, multiconductor, fiber optic, and power cables. Terminate, test, and modify telephone and computer system wiring as required. Set up, program, and operate computer-controlled assembly, wiring, and lettering equipment. Build micro-miniature circuits using hand assembly methods and precision assembly equipment. Perform sandblasting, painting, lettering, and finishing operations as required. Conduct electrical and dimensional inspections and checks to verify conformance to specifications and tolerances. Prepare and maintain fabrication documentation, job records, and files. Interface with project customers and explain fabrication methods, progress, and technical considerations. Inventory, store, and maintain shop supplies, tools, materials, and work areas. Equipment and Tools Used Work may involve the use of: Precision measuring and test instruments, including multimeters, continuity testers, coil turns testers, and digital micrometers Drill press, band saw, table saw, shears, grinders, punch press, crane, sand blaster, arbor press, and reciprocating saw Soldering irons, wire wrap guns, hand tools, and specialized fabrication tools Paint spray equipment, vapor degreasing equipment,  and soldering equipment Ladders, scaffolds, and other support equipment Materials Used Work may involve a wide variety of materials and components, including: Integrated circuits, transistors, resistors, capacitors, printed circuit boards, transformers, meters, and variacs Wire, cable, connectors, insulation, cabinets, screws, nuts, bolts, and other hardware Paints, epoxies, resins, varnishes, solvents, solder, flux, RTV, adhesives, tapes, and cleaning chemicals Sheet metal, epoxy glass, plexiglass, fiberglass, textolite, mica, foils, amorphous metals, ceramics, fiber optics, and microminiature components Responsibility and Collaboration Coordinates work with coworkers, engineering personnel, supervision, and project customers as needed. Work Standards Perform all operations to close electrical and mechanical tolerances. Ensure finished work meets customer requirements, engineering specifications, and accepted industry standards. Maintain orderly work areas and equipment through strong housekeeping practices. Follow all applicable safety, quality, and operating requirements. Preferred Skills and Characteristics Strong mechanical and electrical fabrication ability Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and verbal instructions Skill in precision assembly, wiring, testing, and troubleshooting Attention to detail and ability to work to close tolerances Ability to manage multiple materials, tools, and fabrication methods in a prototype environment Strong communication and customer-interface skills Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent The hourly pay range for this position $45.07 - 52.52 USD (US) per hour.
