A Substation Field Engineering Intern supports engineers responsible for the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of electrical substations. The role typically combines office engineering work with field exposure to substation equipment, maintenance activities, construction projects, and system troubleshooting. Initiating and executing emergency and fast track substation equipment replacement projects. Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to: Assist with reviewing engineering drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams. Support development of construction work packages and scope of work documents. Help track project schedules, budgets, and material deliveries. This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements
Current student, Junior or higher Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field. Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications
Completed coursework in power systems, electrical circuits, protective relaying, power distribution, or substation engineering. Previous internship, co-op, laboratory, construction, or utility industry experience preferred. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Willingness to support field crews and contribute to team success in both office and field settings. Ability to take direction, learn quickly, and adapt to changing priorities. Commitment to safety, accountability, and collaboration. Positive attitude with a strong customer-service mindset toward internal stakeholders and field personnel.
