Job Description
The External Fraud Investigations Team Lead oversees a team of fraud investigators in a high-volume environment, ensuring investigations are completed accurately, timely, and in compliance with regulatory and internal requirements. This role drives team performance, develops investigator capability, manages operational risk, and serves as a subject matter expert on external fraud typologies and investigative practices.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership Lead and develop a team of 8-14 fraud investigators through coaching, performance management, training, and employee development. Monitor productivity, quality, aging, and service-level metrics to ensure operational goals are met. Assign workloads and resources to balance capacity and meet deadlines. Review and provide guidance on complex investigations, case decisions, and escalation matters. Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team culture. Regulatory Compliance & Investigations Ensure investigations and Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) recommendations are accurate, timely, and compliant with regulatory and internal requirements. Provide expertise on investigative standards, escalation protocols, and Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) requirements. Support audits, regulatory exams, quality reviews, and remediation efforts. Escalate significant risks, trends, and control concerns to leadership. Risk Management & Process Improvement Identify emerging fraud trends, control gaps, and operational risks through investigative findings. Partner with Compliance, Legal, Risk, Technology, and business stakeholders to address complex fraud issues. Recommend and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency, quality, and consistency. Communicate performance, trends, risks, and resource needs through effective reporting. Key Success Measures Timely and accurate completion of investigations and SAR-related activities. Achievement of productivity, quality, aging, and service-level objectives. Effective workload management and backlog reduction. Positive audit, quality assurance, and regulatory review results. Strong employee development, engagement, and retention. Identification and escalation of fraud trends, risks, and control gaps. Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience - Typically more than eight years of applicable experience Preferred Skills/Experience - Experience leading investigative, fraud, financial crimes, compliance, or risk management teams. - Strong knowledge of fraud investigations, regulatory requirements, and risk management practices. - Proven ability to analyze complex issues, make sound decisions, and manage competing priorities. - Excellent communication, coaching, and stakeholder management skills. - Experience with case management, fraud detection, reporting, and analytics tools. - Strong leadership and management skills of processes, projects and people - Effective written and verbal communication skills - Strong analytical, problem-solving and negotiation skills - Proficient computer skills, especially Microsoft Office applications - Applicable professional certifications This role requires working from a U.S. Bank location three (3) or more days per week.
