Job Category Technology Compensation Overview The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards. Salary Range $99,100.00 - $163,400.00 Target Openings 1 What Is the Opportunity? Travelers is seeking a Software Engineer I to join our organization as we grow and transform our Technology landscape. Individual will complete intermediate end to end engineering tasks for specific system assignments including developing, analyzing, configuring, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementing based on user or system design specifications, as well as participating in troubleshooting, conducting impact analysis and escalating appropriately. This engineer will contribute to the BSI Cyber Scan platform — a multi-codebase system spanning Elixir services, Python components, JavaScript/React front-end, PostgreSQL databases, and AWS Lambda /Step functions. The platform is central to Travelers' cyber underwriting capability and feeds multiple stakeholder groups: Data Science, Risk Services, Data Platform, Underwriting, Pricing, and RQI Platforms. Per the job requisition, this role is responsible for: Performing analysis, design, development, and configuration functions and defining technical requirements for assignments of intermediate complexity. Participating with the team to perform analysis, assessment, and resolution for defects and incidents of intermediate complexity, escalating appropriately. Working within team guidelines to independently tackle well-scoped problems. Seeking opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities. What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have? Delivery Delivers work at a steady, predictable pace; decomposes assignments into small batch releases. Contributes to trade-off and negotiation discussions within the team. Domain Expertise Demonstrates understanding of technical concepts necessary to do the job effectively. Experience with Elixir or another functional/actor-model language strongly preferred; willingness to learn Elixir required. Comfort working across multiple languages and codebases (Elixir, Python, JavaScript/React) in a single product ecosystem. Familiarity with AWS cloud services — Lambda, S3, RDS, or equivalent. Exposure to gRPC or Protocol Buffers helpful but not required. Problem Solving Strong debugging skills — able to determine source of issues in unfamiliar code or systems. Recognizes and solves repetitive problems rather than working around them. Breaks down large problems into smaller, manageable ones. Communication Clearly and concisely interacts with team members; documents work in an easy-to-follow manner. Takes in well-scoped requirements and asks the right questions to ensure clarification.
