About this role
Overview
As one of the nation's leading electric transmission line construction companies, MasTec Power Delivery companies engineer and construct efficient and reliable electrical transmission, distribution, and substation & switchyard systems. Our extensive workforce includes both union and nonunion teams, which, combined with our specialized equipment fleet, allows us to effectively meet our clients' needs for power delivery, emergency restoration, and ongoing maintenance. We've been involved in some of the most challenging and recognizable electric projects across the U.S. From the electric plant to the end users, MasTec's experienced managers and crews consistently deliver transmission, distribution, and substation & switchyard services with an unfailing commitment to safety, integrity, and sustainable practices. The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for providing geotechnical engineering support for high-voltage electric transmission and power delivery projects. This position applies geotechnical principles to the evaluation, design, and construction of foundations and other project components, helping ensure safe, reliable, constructible, and cost-effective solutions. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting infrastructure, utility, or transmission projects and will work closely with civil, structural, transmission, construction, and project management teams. The role requires sound engineering judgment, strong technical skills, and the ability to manage geotechnical assignments from investigation and analysis through design, documentation, and construction support.
Responsibilities
Perform geotechnical investigations, field evaluations, and site assessments for transmission and power delivery projects. Develop and review geotechnical reports, engineering calculations, recommendations, and design documentation. Evaluate subsurface conditions and provide recommendations for transmission structure foundations and other civil infrastructure. Support foundation design, including evaluation of bearing capacity, settlement, lateral capacity, uplift, and other applicable geotechnical considerations. Coordinate with civil, structural, transmission, and construction teams to develop practical and constructible foundation solutions. Review soil and laboratory testing data and interpret geotechnical information for design applications. Provide geotechnical input for project development, cost estimates, schedules, and design decisions. Support constructability reviews and provide recommendations to address field and construction challenges. Review contractor submittals, respond to technical questions, and provide engineering support during construction as needed. Ensure geotechnical designs and recommendations comply with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and regulatory requirements. Communicate technical findings and recommendations effectively to project teams, customers, contractors, and other stakeholders. Travel periodically to project sites, customer meetings, and field investigations as required. Perform other duties in support of project and department objectives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university. Minimum 5 years of geotechnical engineering experience, preferably supporting utility, transmission, power delivery, or other heavy civil infrastructure projects. Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one preferred. Experience with transmission structure foundation design is highly desirable.
Skills & Qualifications
Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and foundation design. Experience evaluating subsurface conditions, soil properties, bearing capacity, settlement, uplift, and lateral loads. Familiarity with geotechnical investigation methods, soil and laboratory testing, and interpretation of field data. Knowledge of applicable geotechnical
