About this role
About the Team
DoorDash Labs is DoorDash's autonomous delivery group, building the robots and hardware that move goods without a driver. The Vehicle Electrical team designs the electronics at the core of these systems, including power and motor-control electronics, charging, and the test benches that prove the whole system works.
About the Role
As a summer intern, you will own a defined hardware project in one of three areas: an on-board charger prototype, an in-house motor control circuit, or a full-power hardware test bench with motor power and battery simulation. You will take it from requirements through design, build, and bench validation, and present your results to the team at the end of the summer. You will report into the Director, Electrical Engineering in our DoorDash Labs organization.
You're excited about this opportunity because you will…
• Own an end-to-end project in one of three areas: an on-board charger prototype, an in-house motor control circuit, or a full-power hardware test bench.
• Design, build, and bring up hardware, from schematic and component selection through prototype assembly and debug.
• Characterize your design on the bench with lab equipment, measuring efficiency, thermal, and control performance against requirements.
• Collaborate with power electronics, firmware, and test engineers, and incorporate design review feedback into your work.
• Document your results and present your findings to the team at the end of your internship.
We're excited about you because…
• You are pursuing a B.S. or M.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, have no more than 2 years of full-time work experience, and are graduating between Fall 2027 to Summer 2028.
• You are available for a May or June 2027 start date (Internships are only hosted during the Summer).
• You have coursework or project experience in power electronics, including switch-mode converters (buck, boost, PFC, isolated DC-DC), gate drive, magnetics, and power-stage design.
• You understand motor control fundamentals, including BLDC/PMSM drives, inverter half-bridges, field-oriented control, and current and position sensing.
• You understand analog and feedback-control fundamentals, including op-amp sensing circuits, ADC signal conditioning, loop compensation, and stability analysis.
• You can capture schematics and lay out PCBs in a tool such as Altium or KiCad, with awareness of high-current layout, thermal, and EMC considerations.
• You understand lithium-ion battery charging (CC/CV profiles, protection limits) and how a battery management system interfaces with a charger or load.
• You have hands-on lab experience with oscilloscopes, differential probes, power supplies, and electronic loads, and can safely debug high-current, high-voltage hardware.
• You can write Python or C/C++ for instrument automation, data acquisition, or microcontroller bring-up.
• You are able to work onsite at our Oakland, CA office.
Applications for this position are accepted on an ongoing basis
Compensation
