About this role
At AbeBooks, we are reimagining how customers discover the millions of printed works available from sellers across the world. As a Senior Product Manager - Technical, you will define the strategic vision for onsite search and discovery, encompassing how customers find, explore, and engage through keyword search, browse and navigation, recommendations, and personalization. You will own a complex product area, working backward from customer needs to deliver experiences that make discovering rare and unique items intuitive and delightful. You will partner with software engineers, UX designers, and business stakeholders, leveraging advances in semantic search and natural language processing. The problems you solve may not have clear precedents. You will use your expertise and judgment to define the right goals, evaluate emerging technologies, and design long-term solutions. Key job responsibilities - Define and own a multi-year product roadmap for search and discovery, balancing short-term customer impact, long-term strategic bets, and technical backlog prioritization. - Work backward from how customers actually search and browse to identify unmet needs, developing product vision documents (PR/FAQ), and requirements that translate into architecture for search, browse, and personalization systems. - Establish metrics that distinguish leading indicators from lagging outcomes, using data to identify the highest-leverage improvements across the discovery funnel. - Evaluate emerging technologies, assessing how to apply them to AbeBooks use cases. - Lead product development end-to-end, shipping customer-facing experiences across search and discovery while managing cross-team dependencies, driving prioritization consensus, and serving as the bridge between business stakeholders and engineering. - Build innovative concepts and champion them through senior leadership, on the strategic direction for how customers discover products on AbeBooks. - Manage bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make trade-offs, and balance business needs versus technical constraints to maximize customer value while maintaining system health. - Mentor and develop other product managers, establishing best practices for experimentation, roadmap planning, and product lifecycle management. A day in the life No two days look the same. You might start your morning digging into search performance data, spotting why zero-result queries spiked or whether a new recommendation model is outperforming the baseline. Later, you're in a design review for a browse experience, or sketching how a new discovery feature could help a collector find the obscure edition they're hunting without knowing the exact title. Some days you're writing a PR/FAQ and building the case for investment. Other days you're presenting your roadmap to senior leadership, connecting the dots so the search and discovery experience feels cohesive. When things get stuck, you unblock them.
