Job Description

Vertex is seeking a highly strategic, operationally excellent, and trusted leader to serve as Senior Director, Chief of Staff to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) . This role will act as a key advisor and business partner to the CFO, helping drive execution of the CFO organization’s strategic priorities, operational cadence, and cross-functional initiatives. The Senior Director will play a central role in enabling effective decision-making, aligning stakeholders, managing critical projects, and supporting communications across the CFO organization and with enterprise leaders. This position is ideal for a highly collaborative leader with strong business acumen, executive presence, financial understanding, and the ability to navigate complex organizational priorities with discretion and impact. Work model: On-site or Hybrid Key Responsibilities Serve as a strategic advisor and thought partner to the CFO on key business, organizational, and operational matters Drive planning, prioritization, and execution of strategic initiatives across the CFO organization Manage the CFO’s business cadence, including leadership meetings, operating reviews, strategic offsites, and follow-up actions Develop executive-level presentations, briefing materials, talking points, and communications for internal and external audiences Coordinate cross-functional efforts across enterprise teams Track progress against strategic priorities and ensure accountability for deliverables across leadership teams Identify risks, dependencies, and decision points, and proactively escalate or resolve issues as needed Support organizational effectiveness by improving processes, governance, and communication flows within the CFO’s office and broader CFO organization Partner with senior leaders to prepare for Board meetings, executive committee discussions, and enterprise planning activities Lead or support special projects, transformation efforts, and high-priority initiatives on behalf of the CFO Help shape agendas and content for CFO leadership team meetings and ensure clear follow-through on action items Foster alignment across stakeholders while maintaining confidentiality, sound judgment, and professionalism in highly sensitive matters Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and significant progressive experience in finance, strategy, consulting, business operations, or executive support leadership roles Experience working closely with C-suite executives, ideally within a CFO organization or corporate finance environment Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives from strategy through execution Strong understanding of financial operations, corporate planning, and executive-level business processes Exceptional communication skills, including executive presentation development and written communications Proven ability to influence without direct authority and build strong relationships across senior stakeholders Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment High degree of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment in handling confidential information Experience leading teams, workstreams, or enterprise-level projects with measurable business impact Technical Skills Required Strategic planning and operational execution Project and program management tools Budgeting, forecasting, and KPI tracking AI-competent / curious with advanced Microsoft Office Suite skills, especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Word Data analysis and reporting Business process improvement Stakeholder management across complex matrixed organizations Preferred Skills MBA, CPA, or other relevant advanced degree or certification Experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, or other highly regulated industries Familiarity with enterprise finance functions Experience supporting Board materials or executive committee governance Change management and organizational effectiveness
