The Telecom/Fiber Optic Designer is responsible for designing, planning, and documenting fiber optic and telecommunications network infrastructure projects. This role supports the development of outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) networks, ensuring designs meet customer requirements, industry standards, project budgets, and construction specifications. The designer collaborates with engineers, project managers, utility companies, municipalities, and construction teams to deliver high-quality telecommunications network solutions. What You'll Do Key Responsibilities:
Design fiber optic network infrastructure, including backbone, distribution, feeder, and last-mile networks. Develop detailed OSP and ISP fiber optic designs, route plans, splice schematics, and construction drawings. Perform network capacity planning, cable routing, fiber assignments, and splice planning. Be able to read and understand permit drawings and support permit acquisition processes. Be able to read and understand field surveys and analyze existing infrastructure for network expansion projects. Utilize GIS, CAD, and telecommunications design software to prepare engineering plans and documentation. Develop bill of materials (BOM), cost estimates, and construction work packages. Coordinate with utility owners, and customers. Ensure designs comply with customer standards, industry regulations, and company procedures. Support construction teams during project execution and provide design clarifications when necessary. Review as-built documentation and update network records. Participate in quality control reviews and design audits. Assist in network optimization and future capacity planning initiatives.
What You'll Bring Required Qualifications:
Knowledge in Telecommunications, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or a related field. 2+ years of experience in telecommunications or fiber optic network design. Experience with OSP fiber design and telecommunications infrastructure projects. Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS, QGIS, IQGeo, SpatialNet, O-Calc, or similar design tools. Strong understanding of fiber optic network architecture and design principles. Knowledge of telecommunications construction methods and industry standards. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, utility maps, and construction documents. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home), FTTX, 5G, or broadband deployment projects. Experience with permitting and right-of-way requirements.
