About this role
About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
Anthropic is seeking a Regulatory Counsel to lead our legal work on AI regulation in the United States and to support our global AI regulatory posture.
In this role, you will be an in-house regulatory lawyer for Anthropic's US AI regulation and a key contributor to our global frontier AI compliance strategy. You will provide regulatory-readiness counseling as new laws are developed, day-to-day advice once they are in force, and legal support for Anthropic's non-contentious engagement with US regulators and standards bodies. While the role is US-focused, AI regulation is inherently global: you will help ensure a consistent worldwide compliance posture, coordinate closely with colleagues leading our EU and international workstreams, and contribute to EU AI Act and other international work where it overlaps with your areas. You will work at the intersection of novel legal questions, fast-moving product development, and a high-profile regulatory environment, cross-functionally with Legal, Compliance, Safeguards, Security, Policy, Research, and product teams.
Key responsibilities
• Serve as one of Anthropic's lead in-house regulatory counsel for US AI regulation, covering applicability analysis, readiness, day-to-day advice, and compliance-program design
• Own US regulatory compliance deliverables end to end, such as published safety and transparency frameworks, model documentation obligations, and incident-reporting requirements
• Track legislative, regulatory, and standards developments across US federal and state jurisdictions (and internationally where relevant), assess applicability and impact on Anthropic's business and products, and design compliance approaches well in advance of obligations taking effect
• Counsel legal, compliance, safety, security, and business teams on day-to-day regulatory questions once laws are in force, translating complex and often ambiguous requirements into practical guidance and scalable compliance programs
• Support Anthropic's engagement with US AI regulators, enforcement agencies, and standards bodies — including notifications, information requests, reporting obligations, and voluntary framework and standards processes — in close partnership with Policy
• Partner with Anthropic's Policy and Policy Legal teams on pre-legislative and rulemaking engagement, including comment letters and regulatory submissions, translating policy positions into legally-grounded regulatory positions
• Partner with Anthropic's Litigation and Regulatory Investigations Legal teams on litigation and regulatory enforcement concerning AI regulation
• Contribute to Anthropic's global frontier AI regulatory work where it intersects with US obligations
Minimum qualifications
• JD from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one US state bar
• Hands-on experience advising a technology business (in-house or at a leading law firm) on emerging regulatory regimes, including taking questions from first read of a statute through to a documented compliance position and a shipped artifact
• Experience engaging with regulators, enforcement agencies, or standards bodies in a non-contentious supervisory capacity
• Experience drafting regulatory compliance deliverables, such as compliance policies, regulatory submissions, or published compliance frameworks
• Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly
