About this role
Japan Store Tech is part of Amazon International Technology and builds experiences that help customers discover, evaluate, and purchase products on Amazon Japan. This team focuses on customer-facing programs across incentives, membership, and product lifecycle experiences, including services such as Trade-in. Our systems run at Amazon scale and directly influence the shopping experience of millions of customers. The team operates with the speed and ownership of a startup while benefiting from Amazon’s technology, data, and global resources. We work closely with Product, UX, and business teams to identify customer problems, test new ideas, and deliver improvements frequently. We also build for the long term, creating scalable platforms and capabilities that can support multiple programs and marketplaces. We are looking for a Software Development Manager with a strong sense of ownership and a passion for developing both people and technology. You will lead a team of software engineers responsible for solving complex customer, business, and technical problems. You will set the technical direction, establish effective delivery mechanisms, and work with cross-functional partners to turn ambiguous opportunities into simple, scalable solutions. This role offers the opportunity to shape the team’s strategy and engineering culture while remaining close to system design and execution. You will be responsible for the full software development lifecycle, including architecture, delivery, operational excellence, and the continued growth of the engineers on your team. Your work will improve the experience of Amazon Japan customers and may create solutions that can be adopted more broadly across Amazon. Key job responsibilities You will lead a team of software development engineers to: - Work closely with Product, business, and technical stakeholders to define requirements, set priorities, and deliver results for customers. - Manage the design, development, testing, deployment, and operation of the team’s software applications, tools, systems, and services. - Partner with engineers and technical leaders to translate customer and business requirements into robust, scalable, and maintainable solutions. - Guide technical decisions and ensure solutions align with the broader system architecture and Amazon engineering standards. - Establish and maintain high standards for software quality, security, operational excellence, and technical documentation. - Manage project execution, dependencies, and risks, while communicating progress and decisions clearly to stakeholders. - Hire, mentor, and develop software engineers, supporting their performance, career growth, and increasing levels of responsibility. - Build an inclusive team culture that values ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement. A day in the life Your day is about helping your team succeed and connecting engineering decisions to customer and business outcomes. You might coach an engineer, remove a delivery blocker, review a technical design, or work with product and business partners to turn a growth opportunity into clear priorities. You will not solve every problem yourself. Your impact comes from building a strong team, asking the right questions, and helping engineers make sound technical decisions that deliver for customers and help the business grow.
