About this role
What you’ll do: The Lead Mechanical Engineer - Structural will be responsible for driving the engineering execution of research and development programs for Eaton’s Data Center portfolio . The Lead Engineer will be responsible for the design, analysis, and modification of systems and sub-systems to meet product form, fit, and functional requirements of Eaton's Wrightline Standing HAC Containment Product & Systems in the Data Center portfolio. The Lead Engineer will focus on steel structure design, structural analysis, and technical documentation for Standing HAC containment systems, RapidPOD & SuperPOD for data center white-space infrastructure. This is a lead-level individual contributor role requiring strong analytical rigor, proficiency in structural calculations and applicable design codes, and hands-on experience designing structural systems that support overhead power distribution, cooling, containment, and cable management infrastructure in both existing and new-build data center environments.
Key Responsibilities
Design and analyze structural systems for data center white-space infrastructure, including power distribution systems, containment systems, cable management solutions, cooling equipment supports, and modular assemblies. Perform structural engineering calculations, member sizing, connection design, and load analyses for gravity, seismic, lateral, and dynamic loading conditions. Develop comprehensive structural calculation packages, including load assessments, deflection checks, anchorage design, and supporting documentation for design reviews and approvals. Evaluate complex structural assemblies using analysis tools such as SAP2000 and FEA software, validating results through engineering judgment and hand calculations. Assess and modify existing infrastructure for retrofit, upgrade, and capacity expansion projects, ensuring structural integrity and load-carrying capability. Support new product development by collaborating with mechanical and MEP teams, providing structural expertise, risk assessments, design-for-manufacturing recommendations, and test requirements. Serve as the structural engineering subject matter expert for customers, contractors, engineers of record, and regulatory authorities by supporting delegated design submittals, technical reviews, project proposals, and site-specific engineering solutions. Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. 8-12 years of experience in product design, structural engineering, or engineering mechanics Skills: Strong expertise in structural analysis, structural dynamics, steel structure design, and engineering mechanics , with experience in data center, mission-critical, industrial, or manufacturing environments - specifically overhead support structures, non-building structures, or equipment support platforms is required. Proficiency in SAP2000, LS-DYNA, or equivalent FEA tools , with the ability to validate results through hand calculations. Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) . Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred with strong knowledge of steel structures, connection design, or structural dynamics. Experience designing data center white-space infrastructure , including containment systems, busway and cable tray supports, cooling pipe supports, and related structural assemblies. Familiarity with AISC Design Guides , HSS connections, torsion, and welded steel design. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong problem-solving, process management, and decision-making abilities. Ability to work effectively in ambiguous, fast-paced environments and collaborate across cross-functional teams.
