The Strategic Defense Solution (SDS) team in Richardson, TX is seeking a highly motivated Principal Mechanical Engineer that is passionate about the design, development, and integration of dynamic electro-mechanical systems. In this role you will serve as a technical leader and subject-matter expert responsible for architecting, developing, and validating electric motors for complex mechanical and aerospace applications. The selected candidate will also work closely with other disciplines, such as Electrical, Systems, and Test Engineering to ensure all mechanical systems and components meet requirements during all phases of our products’ lifecycle. Sign-on Bonus Eligible What You Will Do: Lead the conceptual and detailed design of electric motors, including rotor/stator architecture, mechanical structure, cooling systems, and material selection. Own the technical requirements, system configuration, and design strategy for development programs. Communicate technical topics and issues in a clear and concise manner to both technical peers as well as non-technical team members. Contributes to the design and/or selection of mechanical and electro-mechanical hardware such as motors, hydraulic pumps, bearings, and large rotating equipment. Perform analysis on selected components to ensure functional requirements of equipment are met. Conduct prototype build, integration, and testing activities to validate component and system level compliance with customer requirements. Conduct and provide constructive feedback during peer reviews. Mentor and document knowledge to provide technical domain guidance to both members of own team and beyond. Work proactively and in a self-driven manner with an integrated product team (IPT) to manage project scope and budget, as well as identify risks and opportunities.

Qualifications

You Must Have: Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience. The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.  U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.  Previous experience in rotating machinery fundamentals including rotor and stator mechanical design, bearing selection, motor balancing and rotor containment.  Previous experience in thermal management for motors including liquid or air cooling, understanding of conduction paths and understanding of heat rejection through bearings and housings.
