The Role and Why It's Important Our Host and Hostess team members are the first and last impression guests have of the Market Grille, and that moment matters more than almost anything else. In this role, you'll welcome guests warmly, manage seating and reservations, coordinate with the dining room team, and make sure every visit starts and ends on a high note. What You'll Do
No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect: Greet every guest with a warm, friendly welcome as soon as they arrive and escort them to their table Plan the seating chart, organize reservations, and assign patrons to tables based on their needs and server rotation to ensure balanced seating Present menus, answer questions about menu items, and make recommendations upon request Keep servers informed when guests are seated and check in with guests to ensure satisfaction with their food and service Respond to guest complaints or concerns promptly and involve a manager when needed Say a genuine goodbye to every guest as they leave and ensure their experience was a positive one Maintain clean, spot-free menus and ensure entry doors and the host stand are clean and inviting at all times Inspect dining room serving stations for neatness and cleanliness and requisition linens and supplies as needed Maintain communication with kitchen staff, management, and serving staff to ensure dining details are handled properly Prepare beverages and expedite food orders as needed Clean tables or counters after guests have finished dining Total receipts at the end of shift to verify sales and clear the cash register where applicable Assist with scheduling work hours and keeping time records of dining room workers as needed Assist in planning menus and order product and supplies as necessary Answer the telephone within two rings with a friendly, company-approved greeting Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines Report to work when scheduled and on time Your Skills To be successful, you'll need to be able to: Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables Perform simple addition and subtraction, copy figures, and count and record accurately Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing Work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, guest-focused environment Reporting Relationships Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home; Lead Chef; BOH Manager; Market Grille Department Manager; Assistant Market Grille Department Manager; Service Managers Education and Experience No education requirement; 0 to 2 years of related work experience preferred Physical Requirements Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related
