THE ROLE
This role is built for new graduates who want to work on real AI systems with real customers from the start. As an Applied Machine Learning Engineer, you'll be a bridge between cutting-edge AI research and practical, real-world applications — developing, fine-tuning, and operationalizing machine learning models that drive business value. It's a hands-on engineering role that pairs technical depth with a strong customer focus. You'll join with a senior engineer as your mentor and a structured ramp-up: you'll start by shadowing customer engagements and shipping platform improvements, then take ownership of your own proof-of-concepts and customer deployments. Expect to be in front of customers early — we'll coach you through it. We welcome candidates who have completed a Master's degree within the last 6 months, or expected completion by December 2026 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Demo / Proof of Concept (PoC): Build and present PoCs that demonstrate the capabilities of our AI technology Application Build: Design, develop, and deploy end-to-end AI-powered applications tailored to customer needs Platform Features / Bug Fixes: Contribute to the internal ML platform by adding features and resolving issues New Model Enablements: Integrate and enable new machine learning models on the platform or in client environments Performance Optimizations: Improve the performance, efficiency, and scalability of deployed models and applications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree completed within the last 12 months, or expected completion before your start date, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field Strong skills to work with AI Coding Harnesses Practical software engineering experience through internships, research projects, open-source contributions, or substantial personal projects Hands-on experience building with LLMs or other ML models — coursework, projects, or internships all count Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and genuine interest in working directly with customers Comfort with ambiguity and a fast-moving environment PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Hands-on experience fine-tuning models, including supervised fine-tuning (SFT) or reinforcement learning methods (RLHF / RFT) Experience shipping a full-stack or agentic application end to end, not just a notebook Solid understanding of generative AI, machine learning principles, and cloud or enterprise infrastructure Familiarity with inference serving, evaluation, or RAG systems Why Fireworks? Solve Hard Problems: Tackle challenges at the forefront of AI infrastructure, from low-latency inference to scalable model serving. Build What’s Next: Work with bleeding-edge technology that impacts how businesses and developers harness AI globally. Ownership & Impact: Join a fast-growing, passionate team where your work directly shapes the future of AI—no bureaucracy, just results. Learn from the Best: Collaborate with world-class engineers and AI researchers who thrive on curiosity and innovation. Fireworks AI is an equal-opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all innovators.
