About this role
As a Software Engineering Intern, you will work within a pod structure alongside experienced engineers, learning to steer AI coding agents, validate agent-generated outputs, and contribute to real projects using Dell's spec-driven development (SDD) model. You will be paired with a dedicated mentor who will guide your growth throughout the summer, helping you build fluency in agentic development platforms, AI/ML tooling, programming languages, cloud development operations, and other applicable technologies. The internship culminates in a capstone presentation where you will share your findings, learnings, and contributions with a broader leadership team. ACCOUNTABILITIES Supports AI Agent Steering & Validation: Assists in orchestrating AI coding agents throughout the development workflow under the guidance of a mentor, learning to review, refine, and validate agent-generated output for faithfulness to engineering requirements. Learns Context Engineering: Gains exposure to engineering the context that agents operate from (including repository context, constraints, prior decisions, and reference patterns) understanding that context quality is the primary determinant of output quality. Validates Output Quality & Security: Assists in validating agent-generated code for correctness and security, learning to apply secure coding standards and identify potential vulnerabilities introduced through agent-generated code, with mentor oversight. Contributes to Testing & Evaluation: Supports the design and maintenance of automated test suites and agent evaluation harnesses for both agent-generated and human-generated output, under the direction of senior engineers. Builds Cross-Domain Context: Works within stream-aligned or deep-stack pods, gaining exposure to multiple domains and learning to move fluidly to the work that matters most. Develops AI Fluency: Builds foundational skills in agentic tooling, prompt engineering, output evaluation, and understanding when to trust, override, or redirect agent behavior. Delivers Capstone Presentation: Synthesizes summer experiences, project contributions, and key learnings into a final presentation to be shared with a broader leadership audience at the conclusion of the internship.
RESPONSIBILITIES
KNOWLEDGE APPLICATION Receives structured assignments and project goals from mentor and pod leads; learns to identify resources needed to meet schedules and deliverables. Develops a foundational understanding of Dell's business lines, competitive environment, and AI-native development paradigms. Assists in validating agent-generated output and participates in iterating on engineering requirements as implementation reveals gaps, under mentorship SYSTEMS THINKING & PROBLEM SOLVING Works on defined-scope tasks where analysis involves evaluating the quality, correctness, and faithfulness of agent-generated output against engineering requirements, with guidance. Follows established processes and operational policies; begins to recognize emerging patterns in agent behavior and suggests approaches to the team. Learns to perform root cause analysis on system issues, building the skill to distinguish specification defects from agent execution defects. JUDGMENT & IMPACT Operates with mentor guidance while progressively taking on greater autonomy as competence and confidence grow. Understands that decisions regarding agent governance, steering, and validation affect code quality, system stability, and delivery timelines; learns to exercise sound judgment in a supported environment. COLLABORATION Interacts daily with functional peer groups across the pod and adjacent domains. Engages with Architects, Tech Leads, and fellow developers to understand engineering requirement changes and learn agent-steering best practices. Contributes observations and ideas toward the evolution of the agentic system and harness, proposing refinements from a fresh perspective. SKILLS & COMPETENCIES Programming Languages (e.g. Python, Java,
