JOB DESCRIPTION
WFLD is seeking an experienced, dependable Per Diem Weather Meteorologist to provide accurate, compelling, and timely weather coverage across broadcast, digital, and social platforms. This role supports the station’s weather team during vacations, schedule changes, severe weather events, and other staffing needs.
Responsibilities
Prepare and deliver clear, accurate weather forecasts for television, digital, and mobile audiences. Monitor developing weather conditions and provide timely updates during severe or rapidly changing events. Produce and present live weather hits, newscasts, cut-ins, and extended coverage. Use radar, satellite, weather models, observational data, and station forecasting tools. Communicate weather risks and impacts in a calm, accessible, and audience-focused manner. Create weather content for the station website, social media, streaming platforms, and mobile products. Collaborate with news producers, anchors, reporters, and assignment editors. Participate in community and station promotional activities as assigned. Maintain a professional on-air presence and represent the station positively.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related field preferred. Professional broadcast meteorology experience preferred. Strong knowledge of forecasting, severe weather, and local weather patterns. Excellent live presentation, writing, communication, and interviewing skills. Ability to work independently under tight deadlines and changing conditions. Proficiency with weather graphics systems, digital publishing tools, and social media. Willingness to work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, overnight hours, and extended severe-weather coverage as needed. AMS or NWA certification is a plus. Employment Details This is a per diem, as-needed position. Scheduling may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency weather coverage. Compensation and scheduling will be determined based on experience, assignment, and station needs. Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $40.00-45.00 per hour for high cost labour markets such as but not limited to New York City and Los Angeles, $33.25-37.50 per hour for all other US locations.
