About this role
Overview
Build the platform powering the AI era Come build the foundation behind Microsoft Azure. Azure Core develops the infrastructure, platforms, and engineering systems that power some of the world's largest cloud and AI workloads. From distributed storage and global networking to cloud-native platforms, developer tools, reliability systems, and AI-powered engineering experiences, our teams build technology used by millions of people and organizations every day. As a Software Engineering Intern , you'll work on real engineering challenges with direct impact on production services running at global scale. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers, contribute code to live systems, explore modern AI-assisted development practices, and help solve complex technical problems that matter to customers around the world. Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond. Why Azure Core? At Azure Core, interns don't work on side projects. You'll contribute to the systems that power Microsoft's cloud platform, learn from engineers solving problems at global scale, and become part of a community focused on technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning. Through technical showcases, mentoring, skilling opportunities, and collaboration across teams, you'll gain experience that accelerates your growth as a software engineer.
What You'll Work On
Every internship project is different, but you can expect to: Design, build, test, and deploy software solutions that solve real customer and engineering challenges. Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and technical leaders across Microsoft. Apply computer science fundamentals to complex, large-scale systems. Learn modern software engineering practices, including AI-assisted development, observability, automation, and operational excellence. Take ownership of meaningful work and present your outcomes to engineering leaders at the end of your internship. Teams You May Work With Depending on your skills and interests, you may join teams building large-scale distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, networking, storage, Kubernetes and container platforms, developer tools, engineering productivity experiences, security and compliance systems, or the reliability capabilities that keep Azure running for customers around the world. Build with AI AI is changing how software gets built, and you'll experience that firsthand. Across Azure Core, engineers increasingly use AI-assisted workflows throughout the software development lifecycle, from design and implementation through testing, debugging, live-site response, and operations. You'll learn how world-class engineering teams use AI to accelerate innovation while maintaining the high standards of quality, reliability, and security expected of Azure services. About the Program: This program is open to university students who will graduate between August 2027 and July 2028 and can commit to a 12-week full-time internship from late November 2026 to February 2027 in one of Microsoft's main Australian offices: Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane . Upon successful completion of the internship, interns may be considered for a return offer based on performance and company needs.
