About this role
Job Description
We’re AV Logging and Data Recording within AV Platform Core at General Motors. We build the systems that provide observability across our development and retail fleets. Our data powers AV debugging, validation, fleet operations, and model training, with a strong focus on privacy, data quality, reliability, and developer experience. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for the software that connects our development fleet and retail fleet logging systems. You will help define common concepts, libraries, APIs, and platform components across C/C++ systems running on Linux and QNX-based ECUs, ensuring reliable, scalable, and privacy-aware data recording and offload to backend systems. What you’ll do Lead the design and implementation of reliable, high-performance real-time data collection, processing, and routing systems for automotive edge devices. Define common platform abstractions, libraries, and APIs that bridge development and retail fleet logging use cases. Set technical direction for QoS, backpressure, data privacy, fault handling, observability, and performance reproducibility across logging components. Build developer-facing APIs, tooling, and documentation that improve correctness, integration velocity, and long-term maintainability for internal customers. Partner with OS, drivers, safety, controls, perception, tooling, cloud/backend, and privacy teams to deliver end-to-end platform capabilities. Drive production rigor through code review standards, test strategy, integration testing, soak testing, performance gates, rollout/rollback planning, and operational readiness. Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and raise the technical bar for systems engineering within AV Logging and Data Recording. Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) BS/MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience. Significant experience building systems-level software in C and modern C++. Deep understanding of concurrency, memory management, performance profiling, low-latency systems, and low-contention design patterns. Experience designing IPC, messaging, or distributed data systems, including serialization, flow control, backpressure, QoS, and failure handling. Strong ownership of production-quality software, including testing strategy, CI/build systems, observability, debugging, and operational readiness. Demonstrated ability to lead technical design across teams and influence engineering direction without relying solely on authority. What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) Experience with automotive, robotics, AV, embedded Linux, QNX, or safety-adjacent systems. Experience with high-throughput sensor data, telemetry, logging, data recording, or data offload pipelines. Familiarity with privacy-preserving data collection, data retention policies, or fleet data governance. Experience with Bazel, CMake, CI systems, artifact/versioning strategies, and large-scale monorepo development. Track record mentoring engineers and improving engineering practices across a team or platform area.
