About this role
Software Development Engineer — AWS Lambda Control Plane (Dublin) When millions of builders ship their Lambda functions, it all just works — in seconds, anywhere in the world. The machinery that makes that possible is the control plane: the systems that validate, orchestrate, and propagate every function's state so the data plane can execute it flawlessly at any scale. As part of the team you'll design, build, and operate the distributed systems that sit between customers and the Lambda data plane: You'll own the full path from API request to running function. The APIs you build are the public surface of Lambda — high-throughput, strictly consistent, globally available — serving customers and CloudFormation alike. Behind those APIs, you'll design the asynchronous workflows that orchestrate a function's lifecycle: taking a customer's intent — a new function, a code deploy, a version publish — and propagating it safely to the systems that actually execute functions. That means solving metadata propagation at global scale: ensuring every configuration change reaches the right compute fleet, in the right region, with the right ordering guarantees, even under partial failures. We operate at the scale of one of the largest services in AWS. Availability is a first-class design constraint, not an afterthought.
What we're looking for
Experience designing and operating distributed systems in production — the kind where "retry" isn't a strategy, it's a starting point. Comfort with ambiguity: you'll own problems end-to-end, from API contract through data-plane handoff. Strong fundamentals in at least one of: Java, Python, or TypeScript (our stack spans all three). A bias toward simple, operable solutions — systems that are easy to reason about at 3 AM. AWS Lambda is a part of AWS Utility Computing (UC) which provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services. Key job responsibilities What does it take to succeed in this role? You should be comfortable working in an environment dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of customers. You should be intellectually curious, always looking to learn and be dedicated to turning the software developers that use Lambda to build modern applications into fans of the service. You should be somebody who aspires to make the team both productive and a fun place to work. Being excited to learn from others while bringing your own novel capabilities and perspectives. On-Call Responsibility This position involves on-call responsibilities, every builder on Lambda is also an owner. Nobody likes to get paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are well engineered, fault tolerant and meet a high quality bar before the go into production. Our customers expect nothing less. When we do get paged we work together as a team to resolve the root cause of the issue and nobody is left on their own to deal with an operational issue.
About the team
As a team, we are dedicated to making new team members feel welcome and included. We strive to grow each other through task assignments, mentorship, and trainings. As an Amazonian, you’ll work with some of the most talented engineers in our industry. We believe in attracting, developing and retaining talent from diverse backgrounds. We value different perspectives and looking for team players who are working effectively with teams of diverse peers. Diverse Experiences AWS values diverse experiences.
