Role description: Arcadis is seeking a motivated and technically strong Applied Research Water Engineer to join our growing team in Hanover, Maryland. This position is ideal for an engineer who is interested in supporting research and technical projects that address water quality, treatment, conveyance, reuse, resilience, and regulatory compliance challenges for municipal and utility clients. Collaborating with our experienced Water Professionals, you will support and drive development of projects, interact and work with clients, and develop your technical capabilities. Arcadis provides multiple onboarding and development programs created for our young professionals that support professional growth and help drive creativeness, innovation, and greater integration within our local, national, and global teams. Role accountabilities: In this role, you will support the planning, design, and delivery of municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams and clients, you will contribute to a variety of engineering assignments from applied research and initial studies through design. This position offers the opportunity to be involved in treatment, conveyance, regulatory compliance, asset management, and emerging contaminants projects while helping deliver innovative solutions for our clients.
Conduct applied research and technical evaluations related to emerging contaminants, microbial water quality, and advanced treatment technologies, while partnering with utilities to pilot, validate, and implement science-based solutions. Support drinking water and wastewater treatment projects through process evaluations, optimization studies, PFAS investigations and treatment solutions, pilot testing, regulatory compliance assessments, and implementation planning. Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams and support project managers in developing scopes, schedules, budgets, and project deliverables while contributing to successful project execution. Participate in client meetings, workshops, business development efforts, proposal preparation, and periodic travel for project site visits, conferences, and client engagements.
Qualifications & Experience: Required Qualifications
Minimum 4 years of relevant experience Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical or a related field of study. EIT Certification or Professional Engineering (PE) License
Key Skills/Attributes
Experience developing and leading laboratory, field, and pilot-scale research programs, including experimental design, data analysis, technical reporting, and implementation of findings. Project leadership experience including managing overall project delivery expectations, prioritizing tasks, and mentoring. Client management skills, including preparation and development of proposals and client relationship building. Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. or M.S. in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Microbiology, or a related field, with demonstrated experience leading and executing applied research programs. Candidates should have experience translating scientific findings into practical solutions for water and wastewater utilities through technical investigations, pilot studies, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement.
