About this role

The Data Management and Research (DMR) team in AWS Networking is looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer to set the technical direction for Mentat, our real-time network analytics engine, and the broader Data Exchange Services that partner teams across Networking depend on. Mentat is built on ClickHouse for petabyte-scale analytical storage and query, Kubernetes (EKS and self-managed clusters) for orchestration at fleet scale, and Grafana as the primary visualization and self-service query surface for our customers. In this role you will own the architecture of these systems, turn the hardest and most ambiguous multi-team problems into clear multi-quarter plans, and deliver them through other engineers. You will drive the reliability, performance, and cost strategy for ClickHouse clusters and their Kubernetes infrastructure across multiple regions, shape how teams consume data through Grafana, and raise the engineering bar through design, review, and mentorship. If you want senior IC leverage where your impact comes from architecture, judgment, and growing other engineers, and you want that work to shape how AWS Networking sees its own data, this is that role. Key job responsibilities As a Senior SDE on DMR, you set the technical direction for the platform and own the architecture of our most critical systems. You take the hardest, most ambiguous problems spanning multiple services and teams, turn them into clear multi-quarter plans, and deliver them through other engineers. You are a force multiplier: your designs, standards, and judgment raise the quality of everything the team ships, and your influence reaches well beyond DMR into partner and customer teams across Networking. This is a hands-on senior IC role where your leverage comes from architecture, direction setting, and developing other engineers rather than from individual output alone. A day in the life A typical day moves between deep technical work and org-level influence. You review and shape the architecture for a cross-service initiative such as the Mentat global rollout or long-term storage, then meet with partner teams across Alerts, SET, CET, and NetOS/NPD to align on dependencies and sequencing. You spend focused time on the hardest design problem on the roadmap, write the document that unblocks several engineers, and leave inline guidance on a design review that sets the pattern others will follow. You dive deep on a recurring operational risk, decide where the team should and should not invest, and make a durability or cost call that holds for the next several quarters. You mentor other engineers toward their next level, interview for senior roles, and represent DMR's technical strategy in broader Networking forums. Fridays are meeting-free, so you protect that time for architecture and writing.

About the team

DMR owns and operates the Data Exchange Services for AWS Networking. We run a stream-first, centrally operated data platform where partner teams co-locate their part of the network data working set, enriched and transformed in memory for real-time use, and indexed and compacted in the datalake for analytics.
