Position
Summary The Process Assurance Advisor is a key analytical and advisory resource within Marathon Petroleum’s Value Chain Optimization (VCO) organization, which connects planning, production, inventory, logistics, commercial activity, data, and technology to improve coordinated decision-making across the value chain. The role evaluates whether Plan-to-Produce processes, controls, decisions, and approved operating practices are working as intended and delivering sustainable business results. Working across process owners, operational teams, technology partners, Process Excellence resources, and other business functions, this role analyzes process, control, exception, and operational signals to identify recurring breakdowns, emerging risks, data-integrity concerns, and gaps in corrective action. The advisor develops assurance measures and business insights that help stakeholders prioritize action, strengthen operating discipline, and determine whether improvements are delivering durable results. The position also helps advance technology-enabled assurance by identifying practical uses for analytics, workflow tools, automation, and artificial intelligence. These capabilities may support exception management, automated reconciliation, controls monitoring, governance reporting, and reduction of manual assurance work. The role contributes business and assurance requirements, interprets resulting insights, and supports adoption rather than independently owning technology products. This individual-contributor position offers broad exposure to enterprise operations, governance, risk, process improvement, data, and technology. Success requires analytical judgment, business acumen, systems thinking, attention to evidence and traceability, and the ability to influence action across organizational boundaries without direct authority.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluates Plan-to-Produce governance mechanisms, controls, decisions, and approved operating practices to determine whether they are working as intended, being sustained across participating organizations, and supporting reliable business performance. Analyzes process, control, exception, and operational data to identify recurring breakdowns, emerging risks, data-integrity concerns, and patterns that may affect Plan-to-Produce performance. Develops assurance measures, dashboards, and recommendations that enable process owners and leaders to prioritize corrective action, evaluate unresolved risk, and determine whether improvements are delivering durable business results. Evaluates the quality and traceability of approvals, decision records, exceptions, and corrective actions, surfacing gaps that could weaken accountability, control effectiveness, or sustained process performance. Influences resolution of assurance findings by engaging process owners, operational stakeholders, Plan-to-Produce Advisors, Standards and Knowledge Management, technology teams, and subject matter experts to establish clear ownership, effective actions, and sustained follow-through. Provides assurance input to change-control decisions by evaluating ownership, approvals, control impacts, implementation evidence, and plans for ongoing monitoring and sustainment. Identifies and advances assurance use cases for analytics, workflow tools, automation, and artificial intelligence by defining business requirements and applying resulting insights to improve monitoring, exception management, and decision support. Improves assurance methods, governance reporting, and monitoring practices to increase consistency, reduce unnecessary manual effort, and strengthen the connection between assurance findings and continuous improvement.
