Lab/Facility Technician II

SUMMARY: The Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting tests, performing chemical analyses, and executing routine technical tasks and experiments involving both non-hazardous and hazardous materials. The incumbent will work with laboratory equipment to analyze samples and substances and perform a variety of skilled and technical work. The Laboratory Technician cleans and maintains lab equipment, including calibration of equipment. PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:   Collects, receives, labels, and/or analyzes samples or substances using the correct testing equipment, when necessary. Collects a wide variety of environmental monitoring samples and implements strict protocol and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance and sample integrity. Designs and executes laboratory testing in line with standard testing procedures, recording observations, and interpreting findings. Organizes and stores all chemical substances, fluids, and compressed gases according to safety instructions. Follows and ensures that safety guidelines are always adhered to within the laboratory. Maintains daily logs and equipment record books. Cleans, sterilizes, maintains, and calibrates laboratory equipment. Performance Hazardous Waste Collection and processing at Special Waste Facilities and One-Day collection events. Performs hazardous waste load checking, sorting and exclusion activities at landfills and/or transfer stations. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ ABILITIES:         Knowledge of basic algebra and geometry; common scales, weights, and measurements. Basic knowledge of soil, groundwater and gas sample collection procedures and chain-of-custody protocol. Skilled in using laboratory equipment and instruments. Knowledge of the safe and effective use of lab equipment and understanding of the hazards and safety precautions relating to chemicals. Knowledge of Microsoft office suite. Effective communicating skills both verbal and in writing.     Ability to keep accurate and timely records and prepare a variety of reports. Ability to perform general lab tests on non-hazardous and hazardous substances. General knowledge of chemistry and/or biochemistry. Valid state driver’s license (may be required as some locations) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   Two years of experience utilizing laboratory equipment to conduct tests, perform chemical analyses, and execute routine lab tasks on various materials. Pay Range: The pay range for this position is $20.35 to $28.00* which reflects the minimum wage in multiple jurisdictions. The actual range will depend on the locality in which you are hired.
