As a Senior Software Engineer within Optum Technology, you will drive the design, development, and modernization of scalable enterprise applications supporting high-throughput healthcare and pharmacy benefit management (PBM) transaction systems. Working within an Agile environment, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to build cloud-native microservices, event-driven architectures, and secure RESTful APIs. In this role, you will leverage enterprise-approved AI platforms and modern development tools to boost engineering productivity, deliver high-quality solutions, and advance our cloud modernization roadmap. You will enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, deploy, and support scalable microservices, cloud-native applications, and event-driven architectures using Java, Spring Boot, Docker, and Kubernetes across the full software development lifecycle Implement secure RESTful APIs, relational database solutions, messaging systems (e.g., Kafka or JMS), and CI/CD pipelines following architectural standards, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and DevSecOps best practices Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with an emphasis on responsible use of AI Leverage enterprise-approved AI tools and technologies (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot) to streamline workflows, automate tasks, improve code quality, and enhance engineering delivery efficiency Evaluate emerging technology and AI trends to inform solution design, architectural standards, and strategic system modernization Monitor application health, perform root cause analysis, and troubleshoot issues across environments using observability tools (e.g., Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana) to ensure high availability for mission-critical systems Collaborate within Agile/Scrum teams with product owners and architects, mentor junior engineers, and promote a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges with emphasis on responsible use of AI You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear directions on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology OR 4+ years of software development experience in lieu of a degree 6+ years of hands-on software engineering experience developing enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices architectures 4+ years of experience with event-driven architectures and messaging platforms such as Kafka or JMS 4+ years of experience utilizing enterprise monitoring and observability platforms (e.g., Dynatrace, Splunk, Grafana) for application health and performance analysis 3+ years of experience developing and deploying cloud-native applications on public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) utilizing Docker and Kubernetes 3+ years of experience with relational database technologies, data modeling concepts, and Agile/Scrum development methodologies 2+ years of experience utilizing AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot) to enhance
