Software Engineer III – Java Backend

As a Software Engineer III at JPMorgan Chase within the Chief technology office team, you will lead the design and development of modern, scalable solutions using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, and Oracle/MySQL databases, along with full-stack UI technologies. You will combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration. You will help shape technical direction and ensure high-quality delivery across the software development lifecycle.

Lead the design and development of backend services and full-stack applications using Java, Spring Boot, and modern UI technologies Build and maintain microservices with strong API design, resiliency patterns, performance, and operational readiness Develop and consume RESTful APIs and integrate securely with upstream and downstream systems Design, implement, and optimize data access patterns for Oracle and/or MySQL, including schema design, query optimization, and transactions Leverages enterprise-authorized AI coding assist tools within the work environment to improve code quality, delivery speed, and productivity across complex deliverables (e.g., code generation/refactoring, unit test creation, documentation), while validating outputs through peer review, automated testing, and secure coding standards; contributes learnings and reusable patterns to improve broader team effectiveness. Applies knowledge of tools within the Software Development Life Cycle toolchain, including enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to improve the value realized by automation. Ensure engineering excellence through code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and observability practices Provide technical leadership through mentoring, coaching, and setting development standards and best practices Collaborate with product, UX/design, QA, and operations to deliver outcomes end-to-end Participate in production support/on-call as needed and lead root-cause analysis and remediation Required qualifications, capabilities and skills Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 5+ years applied experience Strong hands-on development experience with Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem Experience working with Oracle and/or MySQL, including SQL, performance tuning, transactional consistency, and data modeling Experience with software design patterns, API design, and delivering scalable, maintainable solutions Hands-on experience using enterprise-authorized AI-assisted software development tools within the work environment (e.g., for coding, test creation, troubleshooting, or documentation) with demonstrated ability to critically evaluate, validate, and refine AI-generated outputs for correctness, performance, and security. Understanding of responsible AI use in engineering workflows, including data sensitivity considerations, secure handling of inputs/outputs, and adherence to resiliency and security expectations; ability to guide peers on safe and effective usage within team practices. Demonstrated leadership skills including mentoring, technical ownership, and stakeholder communication Preferred qualifications, capabilities and skills AWS experience with cloud services, deployment patterns, and security basics Full-stack development experience with JavaScript and modern UI technologies (HTML5, CSS3, responsive UI, modern tooling) Kubernetes experience with container orchestration, deployments, and troubleshooting React.js experience with component-based UI development
