About this role
Amazon is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Material Handling Systems team. This essential role will support the analysis, design, coordination, and documentation of structural systems used to support conveyors, automated equipment, and material handling platforms across our rapidly expanding network of fulfillment and distribution centers. The ideal candidate has experience in structural steel and connection design, industrial structures, and structural analysis. Experience with computational design, BIM coordination, and standardized structural systems is preferred. The Structural Engineer will be responsible for developing structural calculations, design documentation, and coordinated engineering solutions for material handling support structures, equipment platforms, mezzanines, elevated structures, bracing systems, and structural connections. The role will work closely with material handling equipment teams, building engineers, fabricators, installers, and project stakeholders to develop solutions that are safe, code-compliant, constructible, and scalable. You will work at the intersection of structural engineering and logistics innovation, designing the structural backbone that supports Amazon's world-class fulfillment operations. This role offers the opportunity to impact projects at scale, with your designs being implemented across multiple facilities nationwide. Key job responsibilities Material Handling Structural Systems: - Develop structural calculations and design documentation for material handling systems and associated infrastructure, including equipment supports, structural steel framing, platforms, mezzanines, bracing systems, and structural connections - Support the development of structural permit documents, installation drawings, fabrication information, and coordinated BIM models - Design structural connections from building roof structure and platforms to conveyor equipment, ensuring load path integrity and code compliance - Create specialized connection details for unique conditions including seismic zones and retrofit applications - Design and evaluate lateral and sway bracing systems for equipment and structural support systems - Design structural platforms, access structures, equipment support frames, and other secondary structural systems to support material handling operations Structural Analysis & Calculations: - Perform comprehensive structural analysis and design calculations for material handling equipment supports, including conveyors, sorters, platforms, equipment supports, and other specialty structures - Develop clear, organized calculation packages documenting design assumptions, loading criteria, analysis methodology, and results - Trace load paths from equipment through support structure to building foundation - Verify equipment vendor load data and coordinate with manufacturers on structural requirements - Develop structural load documentation defining reactions and design requirements for coordination with Structural Engineers of Record (SEOR), Building Engineering teams, and other stakeholders - Perform structural analysis using software such as RISA, Karamba3D and other finite element analysis tools Design Standards & Procedures: - Support the development and implementation of standardized structural engineering procedures, workflows, and design systems for material handling systems - Develop and maintain calculation templates, engineering tools, typical details, and design guidelines - Support the development and implementation of computational design and engineering automation workflows - Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, constructability, fabrication, installation, coordination, and overall project delivery - Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, structural standards, project requirements, and Amazon design criteria - Collaboration & Coordination Vendor & Contractor Interface: - Partner with platform fabricators and material
