Program Summary The U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) sustains the Army’s mission to develop, acquire, field, and sustain ground combat, tactical, and support systems throughout their lifecycle. The program focuses on ensuring operational readiness, reliability, and safety of automotive and ground support equipment critical to Army operations. Under this contract, personnel provide maintenance, repair, overhaul, and sustainment support in accordance with Army technical manuals, safety standards, and performance requirements.
Job Summary
The Certified Welding Inspector performs specialized inspection and verification of maintenance and repair work conducted within confined spaces on motor equipment systems. This role applies advanced mechanical and metalworking expertise to ensure confined‑space work is completed safely, correctly, and in full compliance with technical and regulatory requirements. This position is graded one level above Motor Equipment Metal Mechanic due to inspection authority, confined‑space qualification, and responsibility for work acceptance and certification. This position is contingent upon award Roles and Responsibilities Performs in process and acceptance inspections of weldments and welding processes involving a wide variety of items modified or repaired in the shop area. Selects samples of work and performs visual, dimensional and/or dye penetrant inspections of joint design and fit-up on weldments and welding processes involved in the modification and repair of combat/tactical vehicles and such components as frame/hull, engine, transmission, transfer, artillery items and related components. Inspects weldments on castings, repaired forgings and sheet metal products. Inspects items for uniformity, size cleanliness, hardness requirements and compliance with drawings and specifications and procedures. Prepares detailed reports and records and records related to inspection results and submits to supervisor along with recommendations. Investigates causes of critical or major defects and assures corrective action is taken. May stop production to correct discrepancies or unsafe practices. Performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
Confined space training/certification Typically 5+ years of experience performing motor equipment mechanical or metal repair Advanced knowledge of motor equipment systems, mechanical components, and metal repair practices Demonstrated ability to read and interpret Army Technical Manuals, drawings, and inspection criteria Experience conducting maintenance inspections and quality verification Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy Ability to perform work in physically demanding environments Ability to obtain or maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (as required) U.S. citizenship required Preferred Qualifications Previous experience inspecting confined space maintenance on DoD, Army, or TACOM programs High school diploma or equivalent; supplemental technical or vocational training preferred Completion of Motor Equipment Metal Mechanic training or equivalent experience Prior government contracting experience Additional Information This position will be a part of a physical work environment that requires standing, walking, and lifting. There is potential exposure to machinery, tools, fuels, oils, and outdoor conditions. Employees may also be required to work shifts, overtime, or weekend support based on mission needs.
