About this role
Work Schedule Standard (Mon-Fri) Environmental Conditions Office, Some degree of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) required (safety glasses, gowning, gloves, lab coat, ear plugs etc.) Job Description As part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team, you’ll discover meaningful work that makes a positive impact on a global scale. Join our colleagues in bringing our Mission to life every single day to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We provide our global teams with the resources needed to achieve individual career goals while helping to take science a step beyond by developing solutions for some of the world’s toughest challenges, like protecting the environment, making sure our food is safe or helping find cures for cancer. DESCRIPTION: Join our engineering team, where you'll help drive innovation in the development of sophisticated scientific instruments and laboratory equipment. As a Mechanical Engineer III , you will be part of Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VAVE) initiatives, drive cost reduction strategies focusing on precision mechanical design & tolerancing, structural stiffness, thermal stability of our scientific instruments. You'll work on complex mechanical systems from concept through production, applying your expertise in precision engineering, thermal analysis, and mechanical design to create robust, manufacturable products. This role offers excellent opportunities for professional growth while contributing to meaningful technological advances in fields like healthcare, environmental protection, and scientific research.
Key Responsibilities
Design precision mechanical components, fixtures, and motion systems for TEM/SEM lamella handling and microscopy platforms. Develop GD&T schemes and tolerance stack-up analyses for micron- and sub-micron-level assemblies. Perform tolerance analysis, stack-up analysis, and GD&T to ensure assembly accuracy and product performance. Perform structural, thermal, vibration, and deformation analyses using FEA to predict dimensional changes under operating conditions. Apply tolerance compensation methods, datum strategies, and precision alignment techniques to achieve repeatable assembly accuracy. System/mechanical error budgeting, requirements flow-down, sensitivity analysis, and verification. Lead Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) initiatives to reduce product cost while maintaining or improving performance and quality. Design for manufacturability (DFM), assembly (DFA), and metrology, considering machining, grinding, EDM, precision molding, and additive manufacturing processes. Collaborate with manufacturing, metrology, optics, vacuum, and systems engineering teams to validate designs. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical capability development. Support design reviews, risk assessments, DFMEA, and engineering change activities. Collaborate effectively with global engineering teams and external suppliers Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's/Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. 9+ years of relevant industry experience. Strong engineering fundamentals in mechanics, machine design, and precision engineering. Experience in system-level precision and stability requirements and connections with mechanical architecture, tolerances, structural/thermal/vibration performance, metrology, and ultimately verification Expertise in GD&T (ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS), tolerance stack-up analysis, and statistical tolerancing. Experience using FEA tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus and others like CETol . Experience with CAD tools such as Creo, SolidWorks, or UG .
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in Electron microscopy (TEM, SEM, FIB, Cryo-EM), Semiconductor equipment, Aerospace and satellite systems Working experience in scientific instruments, medical devices requiring micro-scale precision Preferred Competencies Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to interpret complex simulation and experimental data. Excellent verbal
