Job Description
The Senior Claim Manager leads a Direct Claims team responsible for handling complex claims and latent injury exposures, including asbestos, pollution, PFAS, talc, and other long-tail matters. This role is responsible for strategic leadership, operational excellence, financial oversight, and team development to ensure high-quality claim outcomes, regulatory compliance, and alignment with business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and develop a high-performing team of claim professionals handling complex environmental, mass tort, asbestos, PFAS, and other long-tail liability claims. Provide strategic direction on claim resolution, including coverage analysis, liability assessment, litigation management, reserving, reinsurance reporting, and settlement strategies for high-severity exposures. Drive superior claim outcomes through sound financial stewardship, innovative disposition strategies, and a focus on timely , effective claim resolution. Oversee litigation and dispute resolution activities, including management of outside counsel, experts, consultants, and vendor partners. Monitor claim performance, reserving accuracy, operational metrics, and emerging trends to identify opportunities for improved results and organizational effectiveness. Partner with Legal, Actuarial, Reinsurance, Finance, and senior leadership to address complex claims and business issues. Prepare and present claim strategies, exposure assessments, and operational updates to senior leadership. Foster a culture of accountability, inclusion, continuous learning, and employee engagement through coaching, performance management, and talent development. Build technical capability and succession strength within the team through coaching, knowledge transfer, and development planning. Ensure compliance with claim handling standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies. Leverage data analytics, technology, and AI-enabled tools to enhance decision-making, operational efficiency, and claim outcomes. Identify emerging claim trends and communicate potential financial, operational, and reputational impacts to key stakeholders. Oversee third-party administrators and vendors to ensure contract compliance, service quality, and cost control. Occasional business travel may be required . Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience 10+ years of relevant claims, insurance coverage, or reinsurance experience . Proven leadership experience managing teams and direct reports . Technical & Functional Skills Advanced expertise in environmental and mass tort claims, investigation, evaluation, negotiation, and settlement . Strong knowledge of insurance, coverage interpretation, and case law . Deep understanding of claims processes, systems, and regulatory requirements . Ability to analyze complex data, financial forecasts, and operational performance metrics . Proficiency in Microsoft Office , including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint , as well as Microsoft Copilot and AI-enabled technologies, with demonstrated adaptability to new systems and tools. Leadership Competencies Strong leadership and people management skills, including coaching, mentoring, and team development .
