About this role
Overview
As part of this team , you will work on some mission-critical platform services that power GitHub's global developer ecosystem. This team owns and operates high-scale distributed systems including GitHub Packages, GitHub Pages, Email Services and other foundational developer experience tools and platforms. These services support billions of requests, stringent reliability requirements, and developer workflows used worldwide. As an Engineer on this team, you will work on some of GitHub's most challenging scale, reliability, and operational excellence problems while collaborating with engineers across GitHub and Microsoft.
Responsibilities
Design, build, and operate highly available distributed systems that power critical GitHub platform services. Develop scalable backend services and platform capabilities using modern engineering practices, automation, and observability. Improve service reliability, performance, latency, and operational efficiency for mission-critical workloads. Own features and services throughout their lifecycle, from design and implementation through production support and live-site excellence. Build automation that reduces operational overhead and improves engineering productivity. Investigate and resolve complex production issues across distributed systems, storage, networking, and service infrastructure. Partner with engineers across GitHub and Microsoft to deliver large-scale platform investments and modernization efforts. Leverage AI-assisted engineering workflows to improve software delivery, testing, incident response, and operational excellence.
Qualifications
Required Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field. 3+ years of software engineering experience building production systems. Strong coding skills in one or more programming languages such as C#, Java, Go, C++, Python, or similar. Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, concurrency, and distributed systems fundamentals. Experience building or operating large-scale backend services, cloud systems, or platform infrastructure. Familiarity with databases, caching systems, messaging technologies, and service-oriented architectures. Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to operate effectively in complex technical environments. Preferred Experience with cloud platforms and containerized services. Experience with high-throughput, highly available internet-scale systems. Knowledge of observability, incident management, reliability engineering, and production operations. Experience with GitHub, CI/CD systems, developer platforms, or package management ecosystems. Familiarity with Go, Ruby, MySQL, Kubernetes, distributed storage, or service infrastructure What Makes This Role Exciting Work on services operating at hyperscale with billions of requests and global developer impact.
